Im pretty sure its called anodizing. I took a huge risk doing this but it really turned out wonderful. I only have one rda, it is an atomic. I found a youtube video where a guy torches his ss rda caps and turns them a cool blue color, ill post the link at the bottom as well as the pics i took of mine, i only torched the air control ring to a brass/gold color. The pictures don't do it justice but damn is it pretty. It is surprisingly easy but im sure it would be very easy to overdo it and mess up your cap. I just wanted to share this awesome technique.

Chipotle.
Anodizing is a term mainly used when speaking about Aluminum, it is not possible to "anodize" Stainless Steel or ANY Steel for that matter. The process of using heat to change the appearance of metal can be call several things but anodizing isn't one of them, you generally find it called "heat treating" or simply "torching". There are even color charts that correspond to heat which produces a certain color.

That being said, it looks real good!

Wow, great info and awesome chart. I originally wanted to go for a redish color but it looked so cool I stopped. Also its my only rda and authentic so I didn't want to ruin it. I did notice that the atomic changed color very smoothly compared to my drip tip. My tip is a cheap one from a volcano kiosk, it started to burn very quickly. I want to try it on a penny next to see how copper reacts.

I think what you did was get rid of the chrome finish, and expose the brass underneath.

The thread title, "SS" suggests you thought it was stainless steel, but looks like its chrome plated brass.

steel tends to have a dull finish; chrome plate is shiny mirror like.

brass looks brownish; goldish; but darkens with oxidation; so it is usally plated with chrome to keep it shiny.

brass is a alloy of copper; it is made because its a cheap way for making the copper more resistant to corrosion.

copper can be a nice shiny golden look when clean and fresh, but darkens very much over time from oxidation in air; example - brand new penny versus 10 year old penny.

No, the atomic is high grade ss. If you torch ss it changes color. It will eventually turn a purplish blue color.

by the looks of it though, whatever the composition of the metal, based on the color, it seems to have a fair bit of copper content.
