Here's a novel idea, why don't we put the onus on the "news" outlets themselves. They obviously know that a headline like "E-cig costs family their home" will grab peoples' attention. How about while they have it, they can actually spread some real information for a change. Any time a story like this is posted, contact the station, provide them info or links to info and ask them to include it in their piece.

Now all we need is a definitive battery safety guide that we can link to.

Make jokes about it. But you know who will get the media attention. And they should. They buy these devices, with no instructions, and you think it's OK that they start fires.
It's not OK!
What other consumer product does this??
Butane lighters are designed like toys and kids set fires, and BIC takes care of it.
Ecig vendors need to step up to the table. Protect their market. Educate consumers.
I'm tired of the user community being expected to defend the market for the vendors.
We already do their marketing and customer support!

Let's see,,,, flashlights immediately come to mind. Rechargeable toothbrushes and shavers say little about the batteries they contain. Enough thinking.

I missed an opportunity to get more information on an incident this past Saturday. I run two poker tournaments at a local pub on Saturdays and was in the middle of the first one when I headed to the bar to refresh my drink. A fellow stopped me and said he saw I was vaping and stated that one of his relatives was using one that exploded and blew out some of his teeth.

Unfortunately, I didn't have time to delve into it with him at that moment and really don't know even what he looked like other than middle aged. I'm going to ask around to some of the tenders since many of them now vape. He probably brought the same conversation up with one of them if he's much of a regular there.

I just had a brief discussion on the battery issue and mentioned the possibilities- the wrong batteries, stacked batteries, improperly vented device. I would have liked to learn more but it was just not the right time to get involved in a conversation.

Basic to Advanced Battery Information from Battery University is full of good battery info.
Endless-sphere.com • View forum - Battery Technology is a battery specific subforum at a place full of e-cars, bikes, motorcycles and RC. Lots there about motors and controllers as well.

Those are mostly battery packs which have a whole lot more problems than ecigs which usually have one battery. Basically if one battery in a pack of 5 or 50 were to 'explode' the whole pack could go - so don't let any of them get out of hand. Simple and complicated electronics to monitor batteries all the time, or especially during charging.
