Richard, Ithink the black are really a very deep purple...at least they were when I grew roses years ago. I had a deep burgandy rose once, it looked like it was made of velvet!

I think MK's right. I've had black dahlias and black hollyhocks. They both look as if they are a true black in bud and when barely open but change to a burgundy tinted black when open.

I have seen some Black roses locally at a florist, but they were cut flowers. :( They sure looked black, but I can believe the Deep Burgundy explanation. It might have depended on the light they were in too!
