On most vBulletin forums that I'm a member of, when I'm subscribed to a thread, I have it set to send me a instant email. However, if I don't visit the thread again I will stop getting notification emails. But here, I keep getting emails regardless of wether I've been back to the thread or not. So if its a busy thread, I might come back to my computer with 35 emails.

Is there a setting that I can set somewhere for this? It really would make more sense to have it set up this way.

The behavior you've experienced on other sites is due to an addon that they've installed that checks to see if you've visited the thread and whether an email was sent. While it works very well for smaller sites, it could very well cripple a site like ECF due to the amount of traffic it sees on a daily basis.

So, to answer your question, unfortunately no, there isn't an option for that.

Thanks retired1,

I now understand why for so many years (12 years actually) one of the forums I visit was much slower than others at times. In the last couple of years, they were FINALLY able to speed everything up by upgrading to several more, more powerful servers. They usually have anywhere from 5500 - 15000 users on at one time. Their biggest issue was the search engine. It seems like it would be much more burden on the system to send out continuous emails after every single new post, but I'm not familiar with vBulletin, as I've never sat it up myself.

So for those who post a lot and keep track of threads, what is the most used method of subscription? Right now I have set mine to show up on my own panel, but I will admit, I've never used that option before.

Generally, "inhouse" notifications are fine for busy threads. For those that you want to track closer, there's the email option. For the panel notification, you'll see the "Notifications" drop down at the very top of the forum show an alert when a thread you're following gets a response.

I must apologize and admit to making a big boo-boo with this one. If you select through my control panel only, it doesn't notify you at all. What you may wish to do is select a different email option where it journals the day's notifications and sends it to you once (Daily option).
