I know there's other threads on this subject, and I could have posted in one of them, but I really wanted to touch a couple subjects.
I started smoking when I was 8 years old. Back then cigarette adds were everywhere. On TV, in stores, billboards, radio, even bugs bonny smoked. I started taking cigarettes from my moms purse, and it wasn't long before I was buying a pack a day. It was easy to buy cigarettes then. Half the time the gas station attendants didn't care how old you were, or assumed you were getting them for a parent. And if they wouldn't sell to you, you just asked a random smoker to go in and get you a pack. Cigarettes were cheap then too. Maybe a dollar a pack. I was buying a pack a day with what I found in the couch. My pack a day habit continued for 20 years.
When I was 20 years old, I had a "minor" heart attack. 20 years old and I had a heart attack. My doctor told me I needed to quit smoking, so I tried. I went cold turkey at first. That didn't work so I tried the patch. After spending $200 on patches and still smoking, I tried the gum. The gum made me so sick to my stomach that I couldn't eat, I lost 40 pounds in a month. I was still smoking. I gave up on quiting at that point.
A year later my wife and I had our first child. I decided to quit again. This time I tried hypnosis. I had heard it had worked for some people. I went to the appointment, which cost me $1500, and was hypnotised. When I woke up the hypnotist lit up a cigarette and asked if I wanted one. I said no. I thought awesome, I finally quit. I left the office and immediately wanted a cigarette. Fail again. Then the cycle of patches gums and inhalers started and ended again. A couple thousands dollars down the hole and I was still a smoker.
About three months ago my youngest son (three children at this point) tells me he wants a cigarette, time to quit. I got online and did some searching, and I found electric cigarettes, after making a couple bad purchases I finally found a good one. Now I'm turning 28 years old and I'm 3 months without a cigarette, I feel better, I'm happier. Food taste better, everything smells better, and best of all, I was able to tell my children that smoking was killing me, and I quit so that they'll never do it. I did the math, and I'm saving around $1200 a year. I'm planning on using that money to take the kids on vacation.
