I get a lot of email petitions, but this one caught my eye this morning:

Stop tobacco-Related Diseases that Devastate Lives

Sponsored by:
Legacy

Christine is hungry all the time, but she hasn't had a real meal in more than three years. After three bouts with oral cancer caused by smoking, Christine lost her jaw.

Each year, hundreds of thousands of people are killed by tobacco-related diseases, but an estimated 8.6 million more people in the United States live with serious illnesses attributed to smoking. Like Christine, their lives are irrevocably changed. Thousands struggle with the basic activities we take for granted, like simply enjoying a meal.

We can make sure that more people don't have to live with the consequences of tobacco-related disease. Help all Americans live longer, healthier lives by pledging now to:

- If you smoke, quit as soon as possible
- Give a teen you love the facts they need to know so they can make informed decisions about smoking
- Protect yourself and those you love from secondhand smoke
- Help a friend, neighbor or family member quit

I signed the petition, but added this comment:

I smoked for over 40 years, and 10 months ago I switched over to e-cigs (electronic cigarettes). Now I don't have to worry about all of the 4,000 chemicals and tar in the cigs, I don't smell like a dirty ash tray, can breath easier, and nobody has to worry about my second-hand smoke anymore!!! It's a great alternative for those of us who can't/won't quit... :)

I think that we all need to add our voices to this petition, and let them know that there IS an alternative out there!!! :thumb:

I agree with helping folks quit smoking, what I don't believe in is forcing them too. It is their choice to make and nobody else.

I totally agree with you!! And that's why that petition made me so angry... :-x

(especially after reading some of the comments other people left)

I just signed and left the following comment:

"I have switched to a personal vaporizer after smoking a pack a day of regular cigarettes for many years. Now I don't smell of tobacco smoke, nor do my house and vehicle, I can breathe easier and my wallet has more $$ in it! Personal vaporizers (sometimes called 'electronic cigarettes') are getting a bad rap and ignorance is fueling loud demands for their control - this is wrong. The vaporizer emits nothing but a little steam, does not burn anything and does not emit any 'second-hand' fumes. The liquid a vaporizer uses is nothing but nicotine and flavorings combined with vegetable glycerin - a product so safe it is used in asthma inhalers!
Tobacco is a bad way to satisfy a nicotine habit."

I'm finding talking to people around town that the biggest problem PV's face is bad science.

Cigarette smoking is the WORST way to consume tobacco. Zero is best, but the fact is almost everywhere in the world that tobacco is available around 20% of the population will use it no matter what you do. ..... health zealots in the EU and Australia have done a great job banning snus, yet cigarettes are still legal. Here in Aus, PV's are legal, but importing nicotine is officially a grey area.

I totally agree with the petition except for the monster-in-the-closet of second hand smoke. Bringing a baby to a cigar lounge wouldn't exactly be a smart move, but the kids 10 meters away from me in the local park aren't being harmed by somebody having a smoke. It's bad science and it pisses me off!

Sorry.
