But the OP asked for substitute for nicotine (not a substitute for vaping that still contained nicotine), I would assume, he wants to use something other than nicotine with similar effects.
i understand what your saying, i only posted snus because although it is nicotine, its not well known and may indeed be something the op could try if nothing else suggested works.

Passionflower extract has a calming effect and might serve as a substitute for nicotine. It's available from health food stores in capsule or liquid form. I've used the liquid form (with a glycerine/water base) in DIY ejuice but don't have much experience with it. One drawback-- passionflower can make a person drowsy, so be careful with it when you need to stay alert.

Early into my vaping adventure, I DIY'd a juice that was half Passionflower Root Extract and half 30mg Tobacco Flavored niquid and it made me feel incredibly high, like unable to speak or complete a thought high, and then my throat swole and partially closed up. So, I don't do that anymore. I have no negative reaction to it if I take it the way it's supposed to be taken, diluted in glass of water, and it definitely is calming.

Lobelia supposedly acts on the same receptors that nicotine hits and is supposed to block the effects of it. I guess it's an antagonist like Naltrexone for alcoholics which prevents a buzz if the person drinks while taking it, rewiring the brain to no longer associate the substance with euphoria.

citrus and other sour flavors have their own wierd kind of throat hit. its something that i really dig. Quick Nic Citrus Punch is an all dayer (all nighter, actualy) for me. the nicotine combined with the citrus is a really fantastic sensation.

also, sour drops can be purchased cheaply. you can "sour up" fruit vapes. my fave "soured up" fruit vape is D's All Day with TPA sour (1-5 drops per ml). YUM

That's wild. Won't be trying that one!

On one of my previous quit attempts, I used lobelia tea. It tasted awful and did nothing for me, but it made my tongue tingly and my mouth feel slightly slimey. Blech.

I've seen some DIYers use black pepper flvoring to increase throat hit. There are some videos of guys messing with chili pepper extracts for throat hit, some of the reactions are quite funny. The right amount will get you a nic-like throat hit but at the price of a "burning ring of fire" the next day! LOL These are all things I've read or watched videos of, no first hand knowledge. If you goto the DIY Juice section you'll find tons of info.
