Non-protected or unprotected batteries are IMR batteries.

There are also unprotected ICR li-ion batteries, but those should never be used in any mod. It all about the battery chemistry: IMR or ICR.

I have to agree here... I think you mean that there are both protected and unprotected IMR and ICR batteries.

IMR and ICR only stand for the chemistry of the batteries:

ICR = LiCoO2
IMR = LiMn2O4
IFR = LiFePO4
