Apparently many of you, if not most of you, can put your cursor over the link to a thread and you get a little box that pops up with a nice preview of the thread. Well, I am not blessed with that ability apparently.

So I'm using Chrome, and it must have something to do with that because I DO get the previews on Internet Explorer. All of the other things are working for me in Chrome though, like when I hover over Alerts I get a preview of the alerts that I've received. My pop-up blocker settings in Chrome are already set to allow pop-ups on this site.

I remember when we switched over to the new software, there were a number of us that were not getting the thread previews. I was just wondering if anyone has figured that out yet?

Are add-ons the same thing as Extensions?
Because if so, I have four Extensions, three of which are Enabled.

Not Enabled - Website Logon 6.0.100

Enabled - Norton Security Toolbar 2014.7.12.21
Enabled - Google Docs 0.9
Enabled - Ubuntu light-themes scrollbars 0.9.2

I disabled all of the Enabled ones and closed my browser, then reopened it.
No luck.
:(

I don't know if this matters in any way, but wanted to add all the information I can...

If I hover over a thread that I have posted in before, I get a little pop-up box that says...
Go to first unread post

That is where I am SUPPOSED to get the pop-up preview box.

If I hover over a thread that I have never posted in...
Or a thread that I HAVE posted in but have no new unread posts...
I get no pop-up boxes of any kind, at all.

The pop up preview is Java, the alert is not.
Is Java enabled?
I'm a little confused as to whether or not my Java is enabled.

When I Google how to check if my Java is enabled in Chrome I keep getting stuff like this...
Chrome version 42 will pour your Java coffee down the drain: Plugin blocked by default • The Register
The Chrome 42 – available now – brings about the end of official support for NPAPI, a move that will render various plugins incompatible with the browser. Among those will be Oracle's Java plugin, which Chromium will refuse to run.
I am on a version of Chrome that is higher than the version 42 noted in the link above.

I am not a Chrome user.
But a look at this sites source code does point to .js scripts for the hovering, which is Java.

Enter about : plugins (with out the gaps) in the search field and list your plugins here perhaps so we can maybe pinpoint the issue,
Also, I would avoid anything from Norton, specially a "toolbar" so disable that also, at least for this troubleshooting mission ;)

Yeah, I saw an article online regarding searching "about:plugins" but not sure what the "search field" is...

I am on Windows 8.1 but I tend to stick with the classic desktop.
When I go to the new Windows 8.1 "Start" screen I just start typing and a Search box comes up.

I assume that is what you mean by using the "search field"?

From here: Java and Google Chrome Browser

Enabling NPAPI in Chrome Version 42 and later

As of Chrome Version 42, an additional configuration step is required to continue using NPAPI plugins.

  1. In your URL bar, enter:
    chrome://flags/#enable-npapi
  2. Click the Enable link for the Enable NPAPI configuration option.
  3. Click the Relaunch button that now appears at the bottom of the configuration page.

There is more information on that page that may be relevant, too. Also note that this workaround will no longer work come September, so you may need to use a different browser in order to have that functionality again after that time

Try this:

Go into settings (chrome://settings/) and click the link at the bottom "show advanced settings." Scroll all the way to the bottom and click on "Reset Settings"
If I had to reset my settings to solve this, I would rather live with it.
It took me a lot of time and effort and study to get my settings to where I like them.

And I don't know what those settings are, or remember why/how I got them there.
This just sucks.

When techies I talk to on the phone try to help me with issues...
And they tell me to delete my cookies...

I hang up.

I usually wind up figuring it out myself, and it's never my cookies.
Not once, ever.

And I'm not going to delete them.

But I do appreciate your attempts to help.
And I don't mean to be a ..........

But resetting my settings sounds too much like deleting my cookies.
:)

Yes, I saw that, and figured why bother trying if that really is the fix.
Because as you say, in September the fix is over.

This thread has moved quite fast today.
But I'll give it time and see if other people have other ideas.

My original post was asking if any of the people who had the same problem had found a way to fix it.
I assume it might take weeks for any such people to recklessly stumble in here.

I don't know, I'm just so frustrated by this.
I usually figure out how to solve things on my own.

Even things I know nothing about.
Google is usually my savior.

Java is not the same as java script (.js). Yes, Chrome is kicking java to the curb (and good riddance!), but this does not affect sites that use java script.

I fired up my copy of Chromium (Version 43.0.2357.81) and the preview popup is working just fine.

Go to the browser settings and do a reset to see if that fixes things.

I had such high hopes for Chrome, since FF is getting so bloated these days, but bugs like the one you're experiencing made me give it up. I still have it installed so I can view my websites in it but that's all I use it for.

I had to do the Chrome reset that retired1 mentioned a LOT. This might fix your problem too.

Enable sync and specify what you want backed up.
Okay, thanks, I'm sure I can learn how to do that if it comes to it.
At this point I'll just wait and hope to hear from one of the other people who had this problem.

After awhile I may get annoyed/frustrated enough to take further steps.
