well if you are i would like to know some tip and tricks here and mabey share some of mine too LOL...

what i do is scrap copper, aluminum, brass, bronze, iron, cast iron, steel, pc boards, mem chips, magnets and electric motors, then after i get the scrap and discard all the plastics and usless junk properly, i organize my metals by type and grade in big rubber made bins and then organize the electronics by high grade low grade and tpye by bin also.

once i have a full bin of anything i take it down to the scrap yard and turn it in, on my way home i stop and spend every penny i made on silver bullion and 90% scrap coinage !!!!

once i have a good amount of silver i bring that down to the TRUSTED COIN shop and trtade it in for gold !!!!

i try to keep 80% silver and 20 % gold at all times, or close to that i guess. right now i have a LOT of silver rounds bars and coin and my gold is getting up there !!!

is any one else into this ?

Do you save up ketchup packets from fast food places and when you get a lot of them, squeeze them into a half empty bottle of ketchup?

Actually, I do save silver and gold scraps and when I get a lot, I turn them in and buy more in sheet or wire form.

For those smelting - have you seen anthill casting? Okay, it's kind of gross and I've never done it so no ants were killed by me :).... Molten aluminum is poured into an anthill and something like this comes out:

well i used a thick brownie pan for one of my first silver casts and ummmmmmm... lol i made the rookie mistake of pouring hot molten 90% pure silver into a stone cold cast LOL turns out the temp change causes bubles and a super rough casting !! never agian !!! i am going to pre heat them from now on !

any way it was only 5 oz of 90% silver scrap i melted down to see how i would do at it, turns out i need to buy some borax to clean up the silver and remove impurities and a hot cast to make the mold. but this ingot is still useable for remelt or storage till i get some better molds of hearts and pendants and things right ? hey 5oz is 5 oz i would rather have it in one blob than 20 differant little nick nacks all over, pluss this is easy to remelt.

gona make some neat lil pendants and sutch ....

Mostly detector finds... I'm not very good at panning but still find it fun and get a kick out of running a recirculating mini tromel or sluice sometimes. I agree ... great vacation and it's high on my choice of getaway activities! Certainly doesn't pay for gas but it's fun. It's pretty cool to dig a nugget out of the ground.

Usually for jewelry casting, it's best to use 50% scrap and 50% new casting grain. There's less chance of imperfection. It's not a big deal if you're going to pour into a mold but if it's a one of a kind wax item that you spent hours making, would want my pour to be successful. Have you looked into cuttlebone or broomstick casting? With those, I'd use all scrap since it's pretty organic looking afterwards anyway.

I like the ring. The hammer marks can be a design element or they can be filed and sanded out.

How long did it take you to find all that? I bet it's pretty cool digging out a nugget.

A lot of years of weekends out camping and wondering through the hills with a beeper stick. Some weekends nothing and others score a nugget or two. Finding a nugget patch is the quest but I've only stumbled across a decent patch every few years and I'm way way overdue.
