Hi again Ian :) A good part of our history geek is for period architecture. We love touring old houses and study architectural history. We rent right now, but when we build a house, it is going to look like it belongs in the colonial district of Williamsburg. We have done some house remodeling in the past and DIY and HGTV are two of our favorite channels. I could sit and chat with you on this subject for hours.

Be well,
~A

Hey Angelique, I am also a history geek when it comes to houses and buildings. I explore abandoned houses that are 100 years old and look at the architecture, the building materials, the workmanship. I learn a lot just from exploring these now dilapidated houses. I am a fan of the old Victorian. If I ever get enough money I want to build a 5,000sq foot Queen Ann Victorian. I watch DIY, HGTV, and Food Network for the restaurant makeover show. The kind of work I am doing now is basic modern era stuff, but if given the chance I would love to restore a 200 year old Victorian.

Ah, you're after my period. We like Colonial and Federal. Not that I have anything against Victorians, I just prefer the old stuff. These are some of my favorites.

You should take a vacation to Williamsburg. We'd love to show you around. We know some gems that are off the beaten path of tourists. It would be great to have someone else to geek with.....

.....someone with whom to share the the bliss of casements with original hand blown leaded diamonds, English bond with glazed headers, daub under the arch, tiny seashells in the mortar, etc...... That's the kind of stuff that gets me all excited. Most people, their eyes would get as glazed as those bricks going into such detail.

If you don't already own this book, buy it! Amazon.com: The Decoration of Houses (9780847829163): Edith Wharton, Ogden Codman Jr., Richard Guy Wilson: Books Trust me, just buy it. It is on our shelf next to Palladio.

I am a home renovator and love to talk about and help people with their home improvements. I have been doing this kind of work for 14 years, so if you have any questions or just like talking shop post away.

OMG. Had I known that, Ian...

I literally need to GUT this house and start from the frame. I'm getting so annoyed and overwhelmed with trying to figure out how to renovate this POS house my BF bought.

I LOVE old houses, not just houses though, any old buildings really. I just love all the design details, and the adornment, I feel that most modern structures really lack adornment.

I live in a 103 year old house that I love/hate. :) It has been updated somewhat over the years, but never fully renovated. Which is what I love and hate about it, lol. It still has all the original wood and stained glass, and most of the other windows are still the old ripply glass that makes sunlight shine on the walls as though it's been reflected off water. :) BUT... it also has no insulation except for the attic and 2 rooms that have been gutted and redone, and it has 100 years of layers of wallpaper/paint/wallpaper etc.

I have fantasies about getting off my .... and restoring the house, but somehow I just haven't gotten there yet.
