I've started using 24 and 26 gauge a fair bit myself recently. I've found I don't need to torch it beforehand as it doesn't really take much of the springiness out. I just do the wraps, hold the coil legs tightly while I get the coil in the tweezers and then torch it. Must admit, it is a lot easier to wrap than thinner wire.
I never get red squiggly lines, cos my spelling is always perfect
