Anyone try DIY vari-cool VV box mod

I am new to making mods but have a little bit of electrical background. I wanted to make my own vari-cool variable volt wood mod. I have some beautiful Amboyna burl and really wanted to make something cool with it. Is all that makes the Vari-cool it so efficient the 3amp switching regulator ? Any help or direction would be greatly appreciated ......Thx
