I am wanting to purchase something from the USA and need a way to pay using a credit card type of payment. I have heard there are re-loadable cards out there but I thought that some sites will not accept these as they are not registered the same way that regular cards are. Any info would be appreciated.

I use the prepaid mastercard and visa gift cards from Safeway all the time online ... never had a problem, but you have to register them as Cactusgirl said. Only thing is I've never seen one for more than $100 ($25, $50, $100). Canadapost has one they will load for you when you buy it up to $250 but I've never tried it.

Thank you Toronnah, I will check that out as well. Does anyone know if the ones from the grocery store are re-loadable...can you spend what was on it originally and then add more or is it a one time thing? Also does any one know specifically about how it works with a pre paid card thru credit unions? I have been at the same credit union for almost 30 years and would not want to change that. Can you transfer money onto a card from your bank account? If so, how long before it can be used to make a purchase? Sorry for all the questions, and thanks in advance for all the help.

Just keep in mind that most of these pre-paids have fees attached to actually activate them. For example, a pre-paid mastercard I got from shoppers had a $4.95 activation fee and then a inactivity fee after 3 months (it was either 3 or 6, can't remember) of 1.5%. Check the back of the pre-paids and find the card that has the lowest/no fees.

I just got off the phone with my credit union and have a re-loadable visa on it's way. A one time charge of $14.95 and a monthly charge of $4.95. All benefits of a full regular visa come with it, such as insurance etc. Takes up to 3 days to transfer cash from your bank account to it and only $1 to take a cash advance. I think this is the best for me. Thanks for all your help guys.
