Aspire Nautilus with Hybrid Top Cap Mods

Hey Guys - I've been vaping an Aspire nautilus for a couple weeks now and have really been digging it. I ordered a SMPL Brass clone, and it just arrived today. I've been so excited to get this set up going, but now I'm seeing that this combo is basically a homemade hand grenade. Are there any work-arounds for the nautilus's floating pin and the SMPL's hybrid top cap? I'd had to have this great mod and not be able to use it, but I also don't want to blow my hand off.

Thanks in advance for your input

Nate

I have an idea. I've taken a fairly thick rubber band and cut into a small square. I then make two slits in it to allow the center pin to protrude. I stretched it around the pin and then trimmed it down until it just barely overhangs the 510 connection. I've tested it and it will thread onto the device and the rubber completely covers the 510 and also helps to hold the pin further out from the device. What do you think, crazy enough to work? I have NOT installed a battery.

No.....Just crazy!

I'm reading online where other similar "fixes" have had moderate success. I've found that I can extend the pin from the Nautilus a bit further, but it doesn't want to stay. If the issue is the battery making contact with the 510 connector, then it would seem that a rubber or delrin spacer should be able to correct the issue, by a) isolating the negative post and b) holding the center pin further out from the threads. I think the theory has some validity, but I'm not confident enough to test it.

The Nautilus is spring loaded, but mine does protrude some, I just don't believe it's enough. I'm sure the end of the story is that I've just wasted my money, but a little digging doesn't hurt. I'm really bummed about this, because I've been so excited about this new mod and now it's barely heavy enough to be a paper weight.

In my experience mech mods aren't very good to use with retail coiled tanks anyways. There really isn't enough power to power the Nautilus well. You end up with a really low wattage that doesn't power the coil well and can easily be exceeded by most VW mods. Even with the lowest resistance Nautilus coil and a freshly charged battery you're only looking at about 11 watts of power which is what I would consider the bare minimum you would want to run the Nautilus at if you're using BVC coils. And even with that you'll get less than a dozen puffs before the power drop off is noticeable. When it drops to the normal 3.7 volt operating range then you're down to just 8.56 watts which doesn't work well at all with the Nautilus.

If you're going to use a mech mod you're going to want to combine it with a rebuildable topper and run coils in the 1.3ohm or lower range.

My original plan was to get the iStick 30w for the Nautilus. I just happened to have a cheap Nemesis clone, and decided to give it a shot, and actually really enjoyed it. You are correct that the drop off is very noticeable. I had read good things about the SMPL, I liked the size and no locking ring so I got it. I just have to be in a shop this morning and happened to mention it and the girl there nearly tackled me. I'll probably just wind up getting the iStick after all. I might try a Lemo or something like that with the SMPL. I've tried dripping, and I'm just not that crazy about it.
