its possible to kill anything through over use... until they make everything out of diamond (the strongest material on the planet if there are any stupid people reading haha) then i am afraid it is possible, but unlikely. the more u use ur atty the less long it will last.
Just my 2 cents worth but I have been having great luck on my 510 and901 attys by keeping them wet (not too much though) its a fine line but you eventually figure it out. And I never clean any atty by soaking it in anything. I blow them out when they look gunky and if its really bad I will drop a couple drops of everclear inside, shake gently and blow. Then I shake it like you do when you want your thermometer to go down and put some juice and vape (dont inhale the first couple of puffs cause its got ALOT of alcohol still in there). I have a stash of used attys that still work after months of use.

I would say yes, I have had this atomizer now for over a month and not a hint of burnt material anywhere. I keep it clean, I keep it moist, and I let it breathe when I feel it getting hot. The fiber stuff isn't much of a problem if you repack your carts with something like the blue foam which doesn't contain any loose fibers that could get stuck in the atty.

The only way I know an atomier is dead is when it completely stops working. I have numerous they are definitely overused since some of them are over 6 months old but they continue to work.
Have you tried to put a few drops of some good high proof alcohol and shake it like i mentioned above? I have brought back some inferior attys that way. Some times you gotta baby em and juice em up good after a good shake with the alcohol, alot of time it will revive them. Unless they taste burnt....then its probably beating a dead horse. By the time they taste burnt they are ruined for good. Just my .02:D
