Would it be possible to use something like an lm317 and the vaccum switch from an ecig battery to make a mod that would adjust the voltage depending on how hard you pulled on the ecig? If so how would this work since the lm317 relies on changes in resistance and if i remember right the vaccume switch works on verry small pulses of electricity.

Those switches go to a chip that makes them work. I really don't see a way to make them work at a different voltage then they are designed to work at. I am still on the noob side as far a circuit design, But i am about 99.98% sure if you slapped 6 volts or even 5volts into one of those chips it is going fry it. here is a picture of one of those switches and the little circuit board it goes to.

Edit: My bad i misread the question. Was thinking The lm317 was the switch not a voltage regulator. Disregard what i posted above.

You'd need something like this: http://sensing.honeywell.com/index.cfm/ci_id/140715/la_id/1/document/1/re_id/0 Honeywell makes about every type of airflow sensor that exists. I am familliar w/ airlow sensors for cars(I modded my 5.0 TBird), but as far as these micro sensors...I have no idea. Cool idea though. I have thought in that direction before. Maybe they will send you a sample if you ask nicely. </title> <meta name="robot" content="Index, NoFollow"> <link rel="StyleSheet" HREF="http://sensing.honeywell.com/prism_asset/html_stylesheet/html_stylesheet314188.css" type="text/css" /> <meta name="generator" content="PRISMtm 5.5 - Web Impact Inc. / LOTS of switches to choose from...have fun. lol

1st, the way to use those small tact switches that a lot of people like is to hook them to a mosfet or use an adjustable regulator that has a control pin. What that does is reduce the current/voltage that the switch has to deal with. In theory, the automatic switch you are talking about should work with this.
BTW, I like your idea!

I see two problems. First the LM317 is a poor choice for e-cig use due to it's 1.5A output current and very high dropout voltage, 2+ volts @ 1.5A.

Second the draw itself changes (gets harder) as you use an atty, a new atty has a much more airy draw.
