Avatar...how do you do it?

Can somebody provide a link w/directions on personalizing your avatar please.

I went to my profile, uploaded a picture but only shows up in "my profile" section.
Is that completely different from Avatar?

Yes, go into settings and edit avatar on the left.

There are "Profile Pictures" that are indeed separate from an avatar.

As BigPMan said go to "Change Avatar" instead and upload it in there.
