A little over a month ago, I bought a Vamo V2 and the color is Gun-metal (or it was gun-metal). It's about 3 different shades now. Really strange. The top section is still perfect. The mid section got really dark, and now it is pretty much turning into stainless (the paint is actually dissipating or oxidizing or something:unsure:), and the bottom section that screws on is still all there, but in the last couple of days it has been getting a little darker. I think I got a dud (or a Chameleon). Anyone have one of these? I should post a pic, but my battery is dead in my camera at the moment.

That's good info. And why there are about a hundred comments suggesting the Stainless Steel model. Based on others recommendations, I got the SS one. Haven't had that issue. Nevertheless, just for a change of pace, I ordered a wrap from Jwraps. The textured tan ostridge. Should have been here yesterday or today. Really slow shipping. Not too impressed with Jwraps so far. Will post a pic.

best regards, larry mac

Yeah I got a textured wood skin from vapor skins on my vamo v5.

That's really nice! How are they working out for you? I came across a 'skins' site once and never went back (just wasn't interested at the time), but now that I have this, I might look at some to put on this (Vamo). How do they stick on and do you have any problems of peeling?

Any other finish than stainless steel seems to wear off very quickly. I don't even know why they bother with making other finishes. I've had a stainless V2 for nearly a year now and it only collected minor scratches.
Yeah. Silver is probably my favorite. At the time, I had that urge to get a different look. :)

I love the Wear on the Vamos. Makes each one unique. I recently bought a second just to see what it will look like in a few months
I hear ya'. I'm not really perturbed about it. It just caught me off guard. There must be a bad pigment or something in whatever coating they're using. Now, it is just a conversation piece, in which I would have never thought would happen.

Honestly I really like it. I think it gives it a really nice feel and look. also i don't have to worry about finger prints and such. Took me a while to actually get it but I'm glad I did. Mine was starting to change colors too. Check out vapor skins and jwraps. There are so many choices between the two.

I may just do that. One thing I didn't mention is I'm not crazy about the feel of it. It just feels greasy or oily sometimes. And yes, it does show all of the fingerprints. Thanks Samurai.

I've got a Vamo v5 in Black Chrome. It's about a month old now and still looks like new. I think they may have improved the finish on the newest model. I also have a v5 in Stainless but it's J-wrapped. It's also about a month old. The wrap is holding up perfectly so far no peeling or any signs of wear at all. It was pretty easy to put on too, just take your time and make sure to get it on flat and straight.

For those that haven't guessed what's going on here (and I am surprised the OP being a guitar player hasn't guessed this...), I can tell you.

It's your sweat.

Yes, you sweat through every pore in your skin even though it may be imperceptible. Some people have sweat with a higher acid content than others. I have seen guitar players that will go through a set of strings after one gig because of it. Strips the nickel off the strings...

The plating process involves the plating material being dissolved in acid and the object to be plated in a bath of the stuff. A current is then applied.

Think about it, you have acid on your hands (via your sweat) and an electrical current present.

Same thing going on with an electric guitar/bass

It's not just the gun-metal, I have a chrome plated mod that I ate through the plating down to the brass in about a month. Which is why:

1. I only buy stainless steel mods now.

2. I only use nylon tape wound bass strings.

Like I said, different people have different acid levels in their sweat, could be diet or genetics or IDK. Try laying off the szechuan and tex-mex foods and see if that helps :D

I actually did know this. I refer to it as 'the oils in your pores', but yes..your right-it is the acid. :)

I still think they should use a better quality coating so this doesn't happen, but then we'd be talking about way more cash for one.
