The last time I went on a plane, I had borrowed one of my suitcases and when they all started coming down the carousel, I suddenly realised I hadn't paid much attention to what it looked like...I had a hell of a job finding it, I think it must have passed me a dozen times going around and around the carousel...so my advice to anyone going on a plane is to make sure you can easily recognize your own luggage.....lmao.

Aircraft have long been travelling slowly to save fuel. And whereas it makes sense to carry some extra fuel in case of the need to divert around a storm, for example, the trend has been to carry the absolute minimum, with some planes gliding on to the runway!

Not quite true.....
Yes, planes carry the minimum amount of fuel, but that fuel includes enough to make it to a "diversionary field" in case the airport they plan to land at is fogged in or some other reason they can't land. Usually it is about an hour's flying time worth.

The other thing that is interesting is that 1 pound of weight saved (the best example is airlines removing the ashtrays) over the life of the plane equates to about 1 million dollars in fuel savings. And THAT was BEFORE the current fuel crunch! That's the reason that you see manufacturers going to lighter composites and lighter alloys in the making of the planes themselves.

As far as the baggage thing and the other reductions in service, that's totally up to the individual airline. Charging extra for overweight people, more than 1 bag and shrinking the size of silverware are just a few of the things that we can look forward to in the future.

Happy Traveling!!!!!!
