Couldn't agree more re: academic types - bravo

Not a bad idea, that...

Except that most academic types are nothing more than failed petty tyrants. They absolutely HATE anyone questioning their authority or what is being "taught", and God help you if you actually prove them wrong. Proceed with caution.

As far as the smell goes, switch to a non-tobacco flavor & don't stand near smokers.

As a responsible college student, I tried to do the right thing and went down to the "security" office which is ran by real cops and in-training cops. None was in there to ask about the vape policy.. so I left a message and spent the rest of my day in stealth. When the phone call came, it was from the head officer saying "Absolutely not." to the answer of "Can PV be used in common areas and halls."

So it looks like I'm out with the smokers if I want to do it legitly... so I did... and now my teacher (who is very anti smoking) doesn't believe me that I quit. *lesigh* --- A health class where quitting is 25% of my grade (for the project of "self change behavioral progress project")

Dont know if this will work in a school but in the U.S. you cannot arrest someone for taking a drug he is addicted to. ( you can arrest him if that drug is an illegal substance and you get caught with some on you) Since nicotine is legal, just tell them you have to take it cus your addicted to it. If they give you crap fight it in court. This can be won i'm sure.

I'm a college student as well. I was vaping in my digital graphics class for the first couple of weeks and my professor didn't notice. I was conducting an experiment to see if anyone could smell it. Nothing at all. Until about the fourth week she finally saw me. Shocked at the sight of me taking a draw on the cartridge, she immediately proclaimed that "you can't smoke in here!." So I proceeded to explain to her what it actually was. "It's nicotine and water vapor," I replied. After my description of the product, her mind was set to ease. However, even though she was amazed by the PV, she wanted me to wait until a policy was set in place before I could vape in her class. PV's were still relatively new at the time and I doubt any other students had the guts to try this. Out of respect, I chose to end my experiment that day. Nonetheless, vapor is virtually undetectable in a large computer lab. That much I do know.

Begging pardon, but as a Professor myself, I find it's these kinds of rumors that keep more people from getting an A+ in my classes. They listen to this kind of drivel instead of thinking and taking a chance at doing something outstanding.

I think if it is done properly, with valid and creditable references; and, a professional presentation, any professor worth his/her salt would very much appreciate it. You certianly will not know without trying.

A health professor would probably be interested in learning more about it.

As for 'failed tyrants'...perhaps you should bother to check out the CV of the typical college professor. MOST of them have accomplished more before they even finish their second degree than many people will achive in a life-time. How many books have you written? How many patents do you hold? How many journals were you published in?

It's not so much about ego.
It is about meeting sets of industry standards that usually are NOT set by the individual professor alone.

This may just be the ...... in me, but something like a college dorm or a hallway, I'd continue to vape until they actually made it a "written rule." You cannot get in trouble and make it stick if it's not actually a rule. And if you do decide to openly vape, make sure you drop off a bunch of CASAA paperwork at your Dean's office and let him or her know that this will actually help many spectators quit smoking.

If any self-respecting educator has proof that a "harmless" device can get anyone off of crappy, deadly, real cigs, they are more inclined to listen. Especially if you could get your hands on the Harvard study, Harvard rocks.

Like anyone in any industry, medical profession, aerospace, business, academia, white collar or blue collar, everyone is differnet. There are great people in all walks of life and their are obnoxious people. There are kind, deliberate and understanding people and their are rude, impetulant and tyrannical small minded insecure people. And sometimes there are just plain dumb people. Can't fix stupid, but you can explain and educate.

I didn't have time to read the whole thread, i will later. For now:

ask your teacher to define what "quit smoking" means. That is the real question.
After all, switching to an ecig, for the purposes of this point, is no different than quitting smoking for snuff or chew. You are no longer taking in anything except some nicotine an a bit of industrial flavoring.

As far as being banned, compare it to an inhaler for an asthmatic (although, you were not "prescribed" a PV)(but if you have a doctor friend, and they use some careful wording, you might be able to get a rx for it, or at least a doctor's note)
Steam from coffee is a good one (I got through most of the thread)
Bad breath is vapor, as is calogne. Tell her she can no longer wear anything that gives off a scent (ed vapor?) if you cannot vape. After all, vapor is just condensed gas.

Also, the whole "you can't break a rule if there is no rule" aspect is good.

I think you have a good arguement here; I would love to the the colledge kid fighting this one, but that time has passed for me, for now.
Good luck, I look forward to finishing the thread later.

I have thick skin so I'm going to give it to you straight. Do whats needed to get a good grade. If your teacher thinks vap'n is the same as smoking, then switch to not drinking coffee, or having not having sex :) College is a great time in life, and being a hero will only complicate... not enlighten it. Burning your bra was cool a long time ago.. The world is not the same.

I also have not read the entire thread, but I'm guessing you have already completed this course, and don't need any more recommendations anyways.. BUT, I suggest everyone that was telling this kid to "FIGHT THE SYSTEM", etc., should stand the eff down.

We all know that smoking a real cig will more than likely kill us from cancer in 20-30 years. Yes? Do we in fact know that vap'n won't kill us in the long run? Are you sure? :) I really hope not, but I have a feeling that the vapor will be the main culprit. The constant dehydration of lung tissue will inevitably lead to harming the visceral pleura, and maybe even the parietal pleura.

Can you prove me wrong? Because vaping has been around the US for...what....4 years? Maybe?? Read:

The electronic cigarette was invented by Chinese pharmacist Hon Lik in 2003 and introduced to the market the following year. The company he worked for, Golden Dragon Holdings, changed its name to Ruyan (meaning "to resemble smoking"), and started exporting its products in 2005–2006,[1] before receiving the first international patent in 2007.[2]

I'm sure anyone that responds all HELL NAH, will have read the same report as me, but probably not. If you haven't read the study, you should. Boston University - located on Harvard's website.

If you think I'm anti-vaping, you are wrong. I just like to stimulate conservation :)

Have a great day.

As far as asking "permission":

I don't understand why you'd call the campus police to ask if you can vape on campus, especially in hallways/indoors. Well I understand, but, wow. I mean, what did you think they were going to say? "yeah, go ahead and vape anywhere you'd like. We totally understand that it is different than smoking tobacco and we are very reasonable and understanding Campus Police. "-- when in doubt, people will choose the safer option when making a decision.

AND- what did you think they were going to do if they caught you? Jail? lol. kick you out of school? detention?

AND- why the need to vape openly w/ permission DIRECTLY from the Head Of Campus Police?-- he doesn't own the place, he is there to enforce rules/laws IF he sees you breaking them.

"as a responsible college student"- lol givemabreak. (sorry, had to say it... but, I don't know you and you may be.. just looks funny in text on a forum)

Asking a boss or supervisor is one thing, a cop(on campus in charge of "kids" in his mind) is another. If I felt the need to ask for permission, I would've talked to someone in "admin".

As far as the teacher- I'd probably talk to admin. about her, if she thinks you smoke and that'll cost you %25 of your grade. That is kind of messed up. lol.(She may be allowed to do that... I don't know, I'm outta touch with the current state of our progressive nation) Good luck with that one.

Ok update! Semester is done and I have my final grade (b+ reign if anyone is interested)

What ended up happening is that I took the teacher on break with me. He's a psychologist and I told him I wanted to get his professional opinion on a study I was doing regarding my project. We went outside, I stood by the smokers, and I vaped. We chit chatted over the make-believe reason to talk (how many smokes can be consumed during an average student class break) ... then we went back in and the students that are joansing for a smoke told him that he smelled. I had my trump card right there as far as the teacher went. Heh.

As for the administration. I didn't feel like getting booted for something that's pretty innocent. The cops are the ones that patrol the school as security (mostly the in-training ones) which is why they were approached. If they don't like it, then I have to explain to them what it is and why and all that... Even with the "school administration's" blessings, I would still have to go through it. I guess my real reason for asking them was to bypass the administration because everyone knows they will just take the officer's word over the student. I never was good with politics... so I tried the cops office for the "easier route".

Thanks you all for the suggestions! And of course I still vaped in the halls and in the bathroom, and other common areas... i just kept to stealth. The most favorite method was the cup of ice and straw while holding it in longer and blowing slower.
