I've read a number of times here that stacking batts tends to be frowned upon, just wondering why?...I mean, if you think about the mechanics of end to end batts (as opposed to side-by-side series), what's the difference?

I ask cause I'm in the planning stage of a few mods and I've got real estate issues (don't we all) cause I lean toward sinking the conn/atty into the body (I just like the clean look of nothing but a drip tip sticking out)...before I post another mod to only receive shame and ridicule I'd just like to hear the rational behind the condemnation...maybe I'm missing something?

JK on the shame and ridicule part, you guys have been great, lol

It was frowned upon when folks used unprotected batts.

Hmm, maybe it's a legacy issue, ok, I respect that, I have to say, my ohm's law is fairly solid, but I'm trying to get up to speed on batts...that's a whole new world for me, I prefer 120/208v or 347/600v 3 phase, hurts more when you screw up, but...

If stacked and unprotected, you can more easily over-discharge one since no two batteries wear exactly the same, just from normal variations in manufacturing. For the protected ones, the protection will kick-in to prevent an over-discharge. For any Li-Ion, an over-discharge causes premature wear and can kill one outright if discharged deep enough.

There's no safety issues I'm aware of with running batteries in series over a single battery. People do it all the time without issue. Don't really understand why anyone would "frown upon it". The protected/unprotected issue applies to all Li-Ions to a lesser or greater degree depending on chemistry, series or not.

I saw this referenced again in an other forum, though this time I understood why some may have a bit of an issue with batt stacking...mods where the batt conns are set up to accept for example 2x 18350's "or" 1x 18650 (and employ the use of a magnet as a spacer)
