Hi All,

Just wondered if it was ok to leave batteries unused for long periods.
I go abroad quite regularly to the same location and rather than take my batteries with me each time I want to leave a set there. However I just wonder about the safety issues and affect on life expectancy leaving batteries for several months at a time.

Thanks,
Jet

If the batteries are lithium-based, they can be stored for long periods. However, in order to remain safe and preserve capacity, care is required. Lithium batteries should be stored with around a 40% charge. If you store them without a charge, they will never function again. If you store them with a full charge, you are placing additional and unnecessary wear on the battery. About 3.75 volts is what I personally store mine at for very long-haul storage. Also, store them in a cool, dry place. Heat also results in a loss of capacity and humidity can cause a variety of issues. If the voltage drops below 2 (and if below 2.5 for an extended time), the battery should probably be discarded. When storing, do not store them in the unit nor place them in any position that would allow them to be shorted (i.e.: thrown in a box with other metallic objects and batteries). And finally, bear in mind that even if all of the above is followed, some loss of capacity is normal. Usually, this loss will be minimal, but existent.
