So I have a bunch of sony vtc4 30amp batteries. The green ones. From a few different sources. All seem legit.
One I have been using appears to have a liquid or something underneath the green wrap at the negative end. Never seen this before. The battery seemed to be working absolutely fine however I decided to stop using it incase it is something serious. Let me know if you have ever seen anything like this before.

Actually, its probably nothing more than the adhesive between the metal cell and the plastic wrap becoming loose and causing an air pocket.

It would be extremely rare for any liquid from the battery to leak from the cell body. The cell is metal and not likely to ever develop a leak. If a leak should occur, it would be from either of the caps on the end of the cell. A battery which may have vented could leak its contents, but then you would have noticed a marked difference in battery performance had that happened.

There are kits available to re-wrap your batteries, and I've read that some businesses will provide this service.

Sounds like it's time to toss that battery! I'm not exactly sure but the battery could be leaking. Is their any dark spots on the battery? Are you absolutely certain you didn't get juice on it? I thought these batteries were a solid and not supposed to leak but to be on the safe side I'd replace it with a new one. Maybe someone who knows more about battery chemistry will chime in but if it were my battery I'd try to be on the safe side and not use it. Hope this helps a bit.

I've seen a vtc-4 do this from the bottom. Not sure if the case was faulty or what, I've pulled it from rotation but would also like to know the cause. In this particular batteries life it has never seen a build anywhere close to its continuous rating, 12A max and thats assuming a huge error on my ohms checker and multimeter (0.5 ohms -.15 ohms for errors sake).

Well I mean.... if it is just an air pocket it should still be safe to use. I havent noticed any difference in battery function at all.

I am on Baditudes side on this one. If the battery is holding charge and performing the way it should. Then it simply cannot be a leak.

Reading this thread the guess at the cause may be stress, manufacturing defect, placing the battery in a puddle, shock, overheating. But we're all guessing.

A new battery at about $10, is the same as I used to pay every day for my smokes. If I'm putting it in my pocket next to my family jewels I'm willing to spring for $10, even if the battery may be fine, or if it's noting to worry about
