Battery Issue?

Hey everyone. I'm new to this forum (posting) but have browsed it on and off for some time. I recently bought some new batteries and after a day I noticed some discoloration on the side of the battery. I was hoping to get some advice.

I mainly want to know if it's safe to use. Thanks for the help

Setup:
K100 Mech Mod (Clone)
Brass Monkee v2 rda (Clone)
VTC4 batteries ONLY
Macro Coil Wraps, rarely Micro, usually 5/6 or 6/7 wrap.

Thanks for your help.

Thank you for the welcome!

I'm not 100% on the resistance unfortunately. I'm not sure where to even get a meter. I'm 99.9% sure it's authentic. I think it happened when I dropped it and it hit a peice of metal on my desk, causing an abrasion in the wrapping.

In that case, be a bit more careful. First you need to be able to check resistance of your atty so get a ohm meter or a digital multi meter, doesnt have to be expensive. Second. If your using a mech mod, the wrapper of the battery is important. if the battery case is exposed and contacts the inside of that mod, you will essentially complete the circuit since the positive contact is touching the positive battery and the negative(case) of battery is touching the mod, bypasses your switch and will autofire.

So, to continue this discussion, what is "safe" in terms of ohms?

Technically speaking safe means building the resistance of your coils no lower than "X" number so you do not exceed the amperage limitations of your battery. for example.. .your vtc is rated at 30 amps. a .14 resistance with a battery at 4.2 volts will pull 30 amps from your battery which is at the limit of what the manufacturer recommends as safe. You will want to leave yourself some "cushion" If your a total Noob, keep it at .8 to 1 ohm :)

I normally say that anywhere 1 ohm and up you don't need to worry. 0.7 is still good. But you use the right batteries, so we can delve a little further into the rabbit hole:

BACIS Ohm's law: volts / ohms = amps or volts / amps = ohms

The VTC 4 is rated at 30 countinuous amps (continuous is the key word, not burst or momentary or any other word that does not mean continuous)

4.2V / 30 amps = 0.14 ohms.

Since meters are never 100% accurate, rounding up to 0.2 ohms is still borderline. Keep it over 0.3 ohms to be safe. Your mod will also add a tiny bit of resistance due to materials, contacts, threads and everything that is in the circuit, including how tight the posts are. It is better to measure from post to post after mounting the coil as the final resistance is often lower than when measured directly on the coil leads. I personally recommend to keep it over 0.5 ohms for safety's sake.

You mentioned at least 5 wraps, but did not mention wire gauge, so I guess you are at over 1 ohm (possibly 1.5), which is good.

why do I keep posting long answers when I already know someone will beat me to it because I'm long winded? ;)

Setup is:

K100 Mech Mod (Considering picking up a box mod, maybe a Pioneer IPV2)
Brass Monkee v2 RDA (Dual Coils)
VTC4s only.

Right now, I'm doing macrocoils, 6/7 wraps.

Long winded answers are good for me because I want to have a complete knowledge of what I'm dealing with. I appreciate both short and long answers, no worries - I read them all.

Also, my batteries have never gotten warm, let alone hot. I keep track of that pretty religiously. I'd like to keep my fingers. :p (Pessimist here.)

What gauge wire and what are you wrapping them on? You are probably well within your safe resistance with a 6/7 wrap macro. Unless your using something like 22 gauge.
