Okay so I'm vaping on the Tesla Steampunk Nano. I'm definitely going to have to get a sleeve or something, as the fatal flaw on this mod is the battery compartment.... It' opened while I was driving and one battery fell into my coffee cup. It was tepid coffee so I was able to fish it out rather quickly, pull over and dry it out. I did not put it in the mod, that's for sure. :)

The battery is completely dry and I just quietly shoved it in an empty battery compartment and let it sit.

My question is (there are no stupid questions on EFC right?) junk the battery, right? I mean, I could try charging it or whatever, but I'm thinking 6 or whatever much one battery costs, (around 6 bucks, IIRC) it's just not worth "testing" if my battery is okay? I want to get more anyway, I just hate throwing away unnecessary things... .But every time I look at it I'm like, Gah, what are you even thinking?

I'd just like my thoughts confirmed, I was going to buy some new batteries, anyway, to put in rotation, I'm also just a tightwad who hates dropping batteries into coffee. I know, I know. Sigh.

Thanks for any confirmation. Probably shouldn't have driven so much yesterday anyway, my kid just needed to do a lot of stuff (no car).

Yeah, it's dry and sealed, and half discharged... The most I could see attempting first would be putting it in the charger across the room and watching it anxiously... :) Maybe I am overreacting though, it was wet for less than 20 seconds and dried off immediately.

thanks Puffon, I will see what others say :) Yes, they're sealed, and this one was brand new, no dings, scratches, rewrap needing issues....

If it's all dry and you can't smell any residual coffee, the only question would be if any sugar got dried under the wrap of the battery. I might do a rewrap as a just because, in case any residual crap dried under there. I wouldn't toss it out. As it's already half discharged, I would then throw it on the charger and see what it does. Just have a bucket of sand handy as a just in case (you won't use it, I'm sure it will be fine).

Is that a general problem on the Tesla? The battery door just opens and drops batteries? That would worry me to no end...

Yes, the battery door has been noted as the least favorable thing about the mod. The way it's designed, right on top of charging the batteries from the door, there is no way to attach magnets or anything to resolve the problem. To be fair, I've had it a while and you do need to exercise care, but I've only had it happen twice. The car thing was just unfortunate.

I will be getting a sleeve/wrap in the hopes that it helps with this issue, another member found one on amazon and I am going to have an amazon fit today (supplements and whatnot, nothing exciting) and I will look for it, and also, I will be buying some batteries (through IMRbatteries, LOL). Also need to look up how to rewrap batteries as I have no idea how and some really should be done. So, hopefully that will help. The coffee thing was just... unfortunate. Its hard to gently handle your mod while driving in Tucson, LOL. Even if I don't remedy this problem (I WILL FIND A WAY) it's still the best mod I've ever encountered, though I'm sure there are others that would blow my socks off.... The tesla batteries kinda fall out gently, this coffee thing was a bit of an aberration, though they did fall.... gently, into the coffee cup.

Thanks all for your feedback, I really appreciate it. :)

The same a card way the get the water out of something is to leave it in a bag of raw rice for a couple days. Inside a battery is a thin plastic bag full of battery stuff roll d into a tube with wires sticking out. The danger would b those wires shorting. Get rid of the water and you should be fine

I recently had something similar happen to a battery when I dropped my RX200S and a battery fell out. When I picked it up going in the screen door I dropped it in my glass of Red Wine! Gave it a quick rinse off with water and let it dry naturally. Mine is fine and no signs of the Red Wine on the insulator ring on the top. YMMV

Thanks you guys. Due to the magic of IMR batteries and Amazon I now have 9 new batteries coming and I found a shrink-wrap set for batteries for rather inexpensively. I'd like to think I won't run out of wraps but at some point I probably will.... and I get the process, just reading the descriptions and whatnot. Sounds fun like shrink dinks. I LOVE those, even today.... :) So I'll give the alcohol a shot and actually probably just letting it dry outside... NO WAIT, that's a terrible idea! So I will bathe it lovingly, wipe everything down, and probably set it aside til my wrap stuff gets here....

Steve S, I do drive without a coffee cap, I hate them. Since I'm sorta clumsy I only fill it up 2/3 but I have not had many issues other than the occasional spill. I Keep Calm and Carry on, LOL.

OMG, you should have seen me driving with cigarettes.... The amount of times I've dropped my cigarette and had to swerve, pull over, start rooting for it, etc. The coffee is the least of my problems... Well, it was. Once I feel up to it (kind of less and less ick but yesterday was extremely tiring) I will be detailing my car and transforming it to a thing of beauty (except the holes in the carpet/floor, whatever it may be called. Heh :)

I've never opened an 18650 but to my knowledge that's not how they're constructed. Rather, it's anode and cathode layers with separator sheets between:

Yes exactly that. It's set up as a flat ribbon though which is sealed in plastic. Then the ribbon is rolled up to make a cylinder which is how you get a round battery.

So I rewrapped my battery and used etoh to clean it off, and it charged up fine. I was tempted to take the charger outside, but only because we are JUST finishing up with our insurance agents and mortgage company my husband's fire #1. That is a process I NEVER want to start over, LOL. It really isn't fun to be away from home for 11 months, though we tried to approach it as a Tucson Staycation, LOL, only I was too sick to do much other than wreak destruction, and we already know all Tucson's fun places. We did get to go to Sedona for a week (again) thanks to our really awesome insurance adjuster who took pity on us. That part was fun, though we were too fried to leave the resort, much. We have also been to Sedona twice already. Wanted to bring the kid but he couldn't leave the county, sigh.

Oh well, future goodness awaits, I'm sure :)

FWIW, 18650 cells have layers of insulation between layers of anode, cathode, and electrolyte. Metal tabs at the top and bottom connect the layers to the positive and negative, cathode, and anode posts. It's all sealed with a top cap that's scored to break under pressure to prevent explosion. Then, there's a positive contact cover with vent holes all around.
