It's been short circuited so it has possibly drained too far to take a charge now. Once they go below a certain voltage they are dead and unable to be recharged. And they should certainly not be used if the plastic wrapper is melted or damaged or if any other damage is visible. I think with batteries "if in doubt - don't use it" is a reasonable stance to take.

I'm sure you know now but carrying loose batteries is very dangerous. Use a battery case like this. Never let them roll about with other batteries or metallic objects. Even a "safer chemistry" battery like the AW IMR's will get dangerously hot if short circuited.
