I have a plastic box designed to take 2x 18650 batteries, or alternatively 4x 18350 batteries.

I am going to be using 18490/500 batteries for the first time, and I note that I can also store 2x 18500s plus one 18350 at the end. This seems perfectly safe, and I am comfortable with this arrangement. (My new mod is telescopic, and takes both battery types).

My question is this: is there a problem with storing an 18500 (or 18650 for the matter) and using the remaining space for 2x 18350s? I note that normally this would mean the positive terminal of one battery touching the negative terminal of the other battery (or positive/positive, or negative/negative). Is this safe for storage? Will it reduce battery charge?

Usually I know if a battery is fully charged in my box by how it is oriented (eg positive up for charged, positive down for 'needs recharging'). So if one of my 18350s was discharged, and the other charged, I would like to store them with the negative terminals touching, if possible. Is this an issue?

Apologies for the lengthy post; hopefully my question is clear, though.

Many thanks in anticipation of a response or two!

It's safe so long as they don't rattle. Remember, the "rules" are that if there are any scrapes to the "skin" then you have to throw them away.

I might take that rule with a careful pinch of salt, myself, but that is what the manufacturers say.

For that reason I wouldn't carry them around like that, and it might not pass muster when taking them on an aircraft.

But for storing them at home, I see no problem with it.

If there was such a case that could store an 18350 at both ends of the case with a pair of 18490s in between, that would be dangerous. Because there is the possibility, albeit small, of getting a complete circuit. Similarly it is somewhat more unsafe to store batteries facing different ways, but these cases keep the batteries from touching, so it's safe enough.
