"These days the baddies are the ones smoking the fags. So I almost feel these fake cigarettes have got to be smoked in a smoking area."

Therein is the essential misunderstanding, the essential problem. Looks like a duck, walks like a duck: duck. Looks like a cigarette, produces "smoke" like a cigarette: cigarette.

being used as an example of nicotine absorbtion and exhalation, that pic at bottom of the thread bothers me. All it shows me is 2 stained spots. I could dump a bottle of clear ejuice on that and and I wouldn't be able to say "See? It's clear, no nicotine!". It's a great example of particulate build-up and the damages associated with it, but for nicotine exhaled? Pretty pictures aren't data.

Next up, I'm pretty sure I recently stumbled on a site where someone tested exhaled vapours compared to tobacco and found that most/all nicotine is absorbed. I'll try tracking it down, no promises though.

well, this isn't it but http://www.healthnz.co.nz/RuyanCartridgeReport30-Oct-08.pdf
Section 5 (page 21), it's only one brand but it should still apply.
