I don't know anything about vaping, so I'm not sure what to buy. Price isn't a huge concern, but I'm not looking to spend $200 or buy a $20 piece of crap either. I want something reliable, around the $100 range, slightly cheaper or more expensive is fine.

I know you have to change coils, tanks or something like that every once in a while too. So if you could tell me what kind of maintenance I need to do and how often, that would be good. :D

Welcome to ECF! I would recommend you check out the Kanger Subox kit.

Kangertech SUBOX Kit with KBOX Mini and Subtank Mini - Black

Here are the coils for the tank, they should be replaced every two weeks or so, but it varies...

Replacement Vertical Kanger Subtank OCC Coil - V2

You will also need a couple batteries and a charger, like these:

Samsung INR18650-25R 2500mAh - RTD vapor

Xtar MC2 - RTD vapor

That should put you right around your budget and will start you off with a fantastic setup.

Thanks, when you say a couple batteries, how many do you mean?

Two should be fine to start. :)

If you shop around, you can probably find a better deal on the Subox kit. With the batteries though, you do not want to skimp. Batteries and battery safety are extremely important, and RTDVapor is a trusted source for batteries.

A lot of people I know started out with the eleaf iSticks. They aren't quite as advanced as other mods out there, but they are reliable and work well. You can get one for cheaper than $100.

If you get a tank, I'd look into the Aspire Atlantis tank or the UD Zephyrus. The Subtank was alright in my opinion, but not all that. Then again, I had the mini before they revised the coils and rebuildable base. The Zephyrus is a beast in my opinion, and you also have the option to buy new heads or build your own when you get more confidence.

You need to wash any tank with warm soapy water every once in a while, and you can soak your coils in hot water to clean them out a little if you plan on using the same flavor. Otherwise, you should change them out when the flavor starts tasting off or burnt (especially with darker juices that tend to gunk your coils). I'm sure I missed something, but I'm sure a lot more people will chime in to help you out too.

What about coils and things like that? I know they have to be replaced. Which ones do I buy, and how often do I replace them? What else do I need to replace?

Almost any tank you buy is going to have its proprietary coils. You shouldn't need to replace anything other than the coils. Maybe an o-ring every once in a blue moon as they wear out, but those are cheap as dirt.

List of things you need if you are jumping strait into an APV:
Mod
Batteries (unless you get something that has a built in battery)
Tank
Spare Coils for said tank

The Subox comes with the tank, mod, and spare coils though they have a different resistance. It has the rebuildable deck that you can mess around with and watch some videos on how to use. Just be careful if you go that route.

There are different Ohms for each brand usually, you should buy the coil for the tank that you have in the Ohm range that your mod can handle. I'd say change them out every 2-3 weeks depending on your juice. Some juices gunk coils up really bad, but thats more trial and error.

Most people who start with a subohm kit opt for .5 Ohms if thats an option. For example, if you get this tank Youde UD Zephyrus Sub-Ohm Rebuildable Tank Atomizer
then you can only use this coil Replacement Coil, Chip, Atomizer Head for Youde UD Zephyrus Tank
There might be other resistances out there, but I have only seen this one around. They are making temperature control coils too, but you need a device that can support temp control. Thats a little beyond my knowledge as I haven't started using temp control devices yet.

**Edit** I just looked at their site a little more, they offer the .3ohm and the .5ohm coils.

I'm going to get the Subox. How much juice will I use if I vape a lot? 5ml, 10ml a day?
I'd say 5ml a day is a reasonable estimate. Don't vape it dry. Make sure you fill it up once it gets to about 10-25% or so to help the wick in your coils last. Burning cotton tastes like .....

Welcome. I enjoyed your post (in an ironic way) because some of the "top rated" e-cigarette companies will charge you $200 for a $20 piece of junk. You'd better believe it. :)

You did the right thing to ask on here.... most people make the mistake of actually believing the internet and those shady marketing practices. I did, that's why I'm still here, nearly 3 year later.

+1 on the Kanger Subbox mini starter kit........... The great thing about this starter kit is that it includes everything you need to start vaping (except for batteries and charger)...... You don't have to worry about coils, tanks, or anything else as those come included. Yes, you will have to eventually replace the coils but there are replacements for exactly what you need and by that time you will know all about that stuff. Plus, it is a powerful unit, the tank is good, and you have all the power you need to start with. The Kanger starter kit is definitely a good unit at a great price as well.

Good choice, I assume you mean the kit and thus your tank will come along with the subox?

I suggest space jam for fruit flavors or halo for tobacco flavors, as neither contain diketones, a substance that many (myself included) avoid. What do you currently smoke and how much do you currently smoke? That will help determine the appropriate nic content for you.

    Also...

    Read.
    The.
    Manuals.

It's not a vcr you can tinker with until you figure it out, you're dealing with devices that have safe and unsafe operating ranges. Read the manuals so you know those safe operating ranges.

    Good luck.
