This is an article that's been circulating in the last couple of days, and this line drives me crazy:

Believed by some to be the invention of a Chinese pharmacist, vaping ...

Is this under dispute? Yes there was an eCig in the 60s that never took off but vaping as we know it, did in fact come from Hong Lik whose company changed its name to Ruyan after the product?

I think these ANTZ are even trying to undermine the credibility of the device because it bothers them a lot that a pharmacist came up with it.

Watch for them to come up with some theory that it was actually invented by a tweaker who was doing 20 to Life for child rape or something.

Okay, it's official: I'm adding "believed by some..." to AA's "ANTZ wafflespeak lexicon" (to join "we just don't know" and "deeply troubled that it could be..."). I see two possible reasons Italie used this phrase:

1. She's too lazy to do any actual research, so she's going with what she overheard some vaper say in a bar once...

2. She has bought into the anti-ecig propaganda and reflects this in her word choice. (Anti-ecig propaganda, of course, can't admit that *anything* invented by anyone other than BP could be a solution to their "problem.")

Personally, I'm going with No. 3: All of the above.

The phrase "believed by some" is technically correct. There are some people who believe that vaping was the brain child of BT, and they can't be convinced otherwise. And since the word "some" has no official percentage defined, it can mean anything but none or all.

But I do agree and that it's usage indicates lazy journalism, at best.

Don't forget the infamous, "Large numbers of ________ ..." (Insert your word of choice to validate the misinformation about to follow).

In actual writing, when you don't know something for a fact, you use the fact you have. So it's odd to say "some believe was invented by" when you could just say "was patented by..."

But this piece doesn't strike me as overly concerned about any fact checking anyway lol

Again... just... odd IMO.

Another one to add...

"The science isn't there yet..."

They can use a strand of hair to tell pretty much anything about a person in a matter of a few weeks, but they can't figure out what's in a simple cloud of vapor?

They just don't want "the science" to do what everyone knows it will likely do...take away all of their scare tactics that are enabling them to keep us in the public eye as the bad guys.

We call those weasel words. E-cigs are "believed by some" to contain antifreeze, as well as causing spontaneous tail growth and leading to broken homes.

Interesting, Tom. I am seriously considering renaming the lexicon "ANTZ weaselspeak." It has a nice ring to it, and it conjures up an image that I find completely appropriate...

Well, they also offered this pearl of wisdom:

E-cigarettes are usually made of metal parts combined with plastic or glass and come in a variety of shapes and sizes.

No doubt this profound knowledge was the result of a multi-million dollar study funded by our government and carried out by the ANTZ.

Give me a couple million taxpayer dollars, and I'll do a study that proves the exhalations raise the ambient temperature around the vaper by a fraction of a degree. I'll call my friends scholars and get them to agree with me. Then I can say, "research has shown..."
