Bench Retest Results: BTCAP 42P - tabless 70Α 4200mAh 21700 pre-production samples

    These tests below only note my personal opinion for the ESTIMATED ratings for the batteries I tested at the time I tested them. Any battery that is not a genuine Samsung, Sony, Murata, LG, Panasonic, Molicel, EVE, Ampace, Reliance, Sinowatt, Lishen, BAK, or Sanyo can change at any time! This can be one of the hazards of using “rewrapped” or batteries from other manufacturers so carefully research any battery you are considering using before purchasing.

    Misusing or mishandling lithium-ion batteries can pose a SERIOUS RISK of property damage, personal injury, or even death. Never use them outside of a fully protected battery pack and you use them at your own risk. Never exceed the battery’s true continuous discharge rating (CDR), never let it get colder than 0°C or hotter than 60°C to help lower the risks and extend cell life, and keep the plastic wrap and top insulating ring in perfect condition. Never use a battery that is physically damaged in any way.

    Testing batteries at their limits is dangerous and should never be attempted by anyone who has not thoroughly studied the dangers involved, understands the risks, has the proper equipment, and takes all appropriate safety precautions.

    If the battery has only one current rating number, or if it only says "max", then I have to assume the battery is rated at that current level for any type of discharge, including continuous.

    Test Results
    You might not have heard of the BTCAP brand of cells from Hesheng Hongneng Technology Co., Ltd., but this is a decent performing “tabless” cell. The wrap says 42P but the datsheet calls it the INR21700P4R2C4200.

    Some info…
    • It ran for a touch longer than the other 4Ah power cells, except the JP40. But this 42P did so at a slightly lower voltage than the others. This resulted in E-Scores (total Wh of energy delivered) that were similar for the 42P and those other cells.
    • I don’t think you’d notice an actual performance difference between but test them if even a tiny difference is important for your application.
    • The DC IR was low and very consistent, 8.3mOhms and 8.5mOhms for the two cells I tested.
    • The datasheet only has a 70A “max continuous discharge current” rating with a recommended cell temperature limit of 75°C and a max spec of 80°C.
    • Since this cell would reach its 80°C max at between 35A and 40A I set its true continuous current rating at 35A.
    • I recommend only running the cell at about 50A or lower due to all the voltage sag you’ll see if you try to run this cell at its 70A limit.
    • The datasheet charge ratings are 2.1A standard and 8.2A max. To help extend cell life I recommend staying near 2A.
    • The cells I tested delivered 4283mAh and 4315mAh. This is terrible consistency but is above the 4200mAh nominal capacity rating so I rate it at 4200mAh.
    • These cells have something I’ve never seen before, a line of clear epoxy covering the sets of parallel welding arc lines on the bottom. Were some of these cells leaking in earlier testing? I don’t know but I’ve never seen this before. I recommend not using any heavy pressure on the bottom that could flex and crack the epoxy.
    • There is no CCC*** logo or “CCC” on the wrap so I am guessing that these are pre-production samples or it was manufactured before August 1, 2024.
    ***China Compulsory Certification, additional testing now required for all cells made or sold in China after August 1, 2024. The logo and certain information must be put on all cells once they are certified. This typically won’t be done by a manufacturer until the cell is ready to go into full production.
