I just noticed something at this link - Kanthal Resistance Wire

It looks like the resistance is determined by the width of the wire, not how you actually wrap the coil. Is this true?

It is first determine by the width of the wire. Thicker wire has lower resistance.
It is then determine by the length of the wire. Longer wire has more resistance, so the more wraps you make, the more resistance you'll have.

Correct. 28g is the standard and what most people recommend. I always forget since I always use 28 but I believe the higher you go the thicker it is.. (or the opposite lol)

If you're using an atty on an MVP, I'd probably suggest using 30 gauge rather than 28. With 28, you'd either need a lot of wraps (11+), a larger inner diameter (ID) of the coil, or a combination of both of those in order to get your resistance high enough to not be a problem with the MVP's circuitry. 30 gauge would allow for a nice small ID and manageable number of wraps.

Well, both things come into play. Basically the wider (lower gauge) the wire, the more electricity is allowed to pass thru. This means that your resistance will be lower.....

The longer your wire (the more wraps you have) the greater the resistance, as the electricity has more wire to pass thru....

So if you have an 8-wrap coil with 28ga Kanthal, your resistance might be 1.3 Ohms. But if you use 26ga, your resistance will be lower. Conversely, if you use more wraps, your resistance will increase.....

It's confusing I know, but you'll get it... :)

Actually that makes a lot of sense. I guess it is all basically common sense once you get a foundation. It also appears that once you get a solid build that you like you basically have a reference if you decide that you want lower ohms or higher; you just use more wraps or less, thicker wire or thinner, etc... Pretty simple stuff.

I think I am just going to go with the Smoktech RDA for now and get some wire and standard wicking materials and take it from there.

I'm also new to RDA's. I got my first about a week ago, and while it's nothing too fancy, it was cheap and allowed me to get my feet wet while letting me determine whether or not it was something I wanted to continue with. Really, for the money, I think it's wonderful. Here is a link to a you tube vid that goes in depth with it. This atomizer can be bought at fasttech.

You seems like you know your ish....so....How do I build a higher ohm coil? What is the trick to get the ohm you want? Do I make the coil really tight? Do I make it really loose? Do I spread out the coil or keep it close together? What do I do???

The diameter of the Wire and the number of coils and diameter of the coil will determine your resistance. For your MVP in single coil mode I would start with 28g kanthal and plan on 11 or so wraps around a 5/64 drill bit. If it's too low in resistance add a wrap, if you want lower remove a wrap.

Start here.

Honestly I don't know if I want to go for 10+ wraps. I think I'm going to go with 30 or 32 gauge to start. I'm shooting for 1.5-2.0 ohms here.

The higher the Guage the THINNER the Wire and the HIGHER the resistance. Same for all wire - speaker cables, etc.

Then get 30g. 32 is a total PIA to work with since it's so thin. There is nothing wrong with more wraps as it has more surface area of the coil in contact with the wick and juice. I try for 7-11 wraps for all my coils and adjust wire sizes and coil diameter sizes to reach my target coil resistance.

This is using a mech where you really need to be sure of your build to get the vape you want. On the MVP2 you are correct with targeting a higher ohm coil since you can adjust the volts upwards.

I purchased the 30 gauge kanthal and 2mm silica wick. I heard that the 32 gauge is too fragile and the 28 gauge is not as responsive. 30 is apparently a happy median (I think...)
