For current smokers who have only tried cig-a-likes, I'd something with adjustable airflow and a VV (at leats 1000mAh) battery. Simple. Mostly because lots of smokers want that tight draw and go mouth-to-lung, and you can adjust voltage down or up for less or more throat hit. Current smokers have slightly sensitive throats but need the nic, which is sometimes harsh. When the throat recovers after a few weeks they can stand more throat hit, and most likely will want it.

No need for sub ohm, high wattage, temp control, wide-bore tips... And not everyone eventually moves to lung-hitting and clouds and rebuildables. I bounce to my High Voltage setup once in a while but my Aspire mini Naut with VV batt is still my go-to (smoked 2 packs a day for about 15 years). Not interested in tinkering too much personally.

The most important things when trying to make the switch is to find YOUR desired setup and finding your favorite juices. Gotta be open to trial and error, aware of the options, and eventually spending more money on different hardware if needed. And if they never find the juice they like and experience it the way they like it, back to cigs they go!

I love my Athena Smart 20 and wouldn't trade it for the world. I use a Nautilus Mini tank. It's not the right set up for sub ohm vaping, but I couldn't care less about that. I just want something to keep me from smoking regular, analog cigarettes. If I were you, I wouldn't want to worry about getting her something for sub ohming at this point. I think it would be way too complicated for a new vaper, especially someone who is going to be making the switch from analog to vapes.

I started with a Kanger pen and I liked it too, but the Smart 20 and Nautilus are so much better. They have so much more power so she won't have to be charging it all the time. You'll also want to fix her up with a USB cable and wall plug and another device to vape while her device is charging. Yes, the Smart 20 is a passthrough so you can vape while it's charging, which is great, but that means she has to stay next to an electrical outlet the entire time it's charging, which is a bummer.

There are tons of articles on what nic. strength to try, but it's all based on how many analogs she smokes and how much nic they have. I was smoking a little less than a pack of Marlboro Lights per day and I started vaping 12 mg. nicotine. I loved vaping but I was constantly puffing it and I felt like I was going to collapse a lung I was pulling on it so hard. I still smoked 3 or so analogs a day, too, and I wanted to vape exclusively. The best advice I got was from the owner of a vape shop I frequented who suggested I up my nic content. I went up to 16 mg. and it was much better, but it still wasn't quite enough, so I went up to 18 mg. After I went up to 18 mg. I was completely satisfied and I was completely off analogs within a day or two with no desire for another one.

Good point. Based on my experience, it's always best to err on the side of more nic, not less. I started off at 18mg based on a vape shop recommendation and had to move to 24. You can always vape less, but it sucks to have to "vape more" to try to get that craving satisfied.

You can do everything you just mentioned with a mod such as the IPV D2 or the Cloupor mini plus. You can get coils for a tank such as the EHpro Morph that are not sub ohm....skip the BS and get something that you can actually upgrade with a click of a button instead of spending more for another mod / atty.

My thinking exactly, a sub-ohm capable mod and atty, set up for 1.6 ohm will run just fine at 1.6 ohm, but a 1000 mAh pen can never run 0.5 ohm in a safe or reliable way, and the price difference is less significant to me, than it would be to her, should she need to upgrade from a pen.

On the juice side, I'm thinking a bunch of 10ml samplers at 18mg nic is the way to go. She smokes less than I did, and I never went above 18mg. She likes menthol cigs, so I'll grab one or two of those, some fruit flavors, some dessert and custard, and some cereal flavors, which should give her some idea of what's available, and then she can decide what does or does not work for her pallet.

I think she will probably get into coil wrapping, though sub-ohming I'm not sure of. She's an avionics tech, saying she knows her way around electronics is like saying Eric Clapton knows a few chords. She does soldering work that can only be performed under a microscope.

I've got her set up with an iStick 40 TC. My plan was to give her my Nautilus tanks, but didn't have them handy wen we picked out the rest of her stuff, so I set her up with a cheap CE4 clearo, just to kick things off, and then gave her one of my RDAs when the CE4 failed to make her happy. She's running a 0.8 ohm single coil at the moment, on a knock-off of a Patriot, at is quite happy with that. I have to get her a better quality RDA, and am still thinking an RTA might work out well for her, but time will tell...

Thanks for all the helpful info, and keep vaping!
