I'd suggest getting yourself a Kraken if you really want to rebuild. It's topcoil, but with SS cable and a heavily torched mesh sleeve (or ekowool if you prefer easymode) you can basically have a coil on a tank which I'm honestly not sure is ever going to wear out. Also, SS cable wicks like a BEAST.
Attached are examples of my current Kraken build

That being said, I've also found Protanks can be made pretty amazing with a nice tight ssmesh wick. It's basically rebuilding the stock horizontal coil, ...

I (not the OP) tried this a while ago. Ended up with mouthful of juice. Didn't seem worth it since cotton is damn easy and cheap to replace. I had just some scraps of SS mesh left from cutting a wick for RSST, enough for one try. Doesn't mean anything, of course.

Building a 28 gauge coil for a protank head to help somebody get started vaping is a good idea; the 28 guage would last much longer than the thin wire stock coil I'm thinking.

30 gauge would be a better start. 28 awg would be a squeeze to fit into the head and yet stay above 1.2ohms range. Furthermore, the silicone grommet that traps the leg would be easily deformed/torn and burnt by the thicker gauge.

28 is doable, but I've only managed 1.6 Ohm tops to fit comfortably. If you torch it, you might squeeze a bit more, but I don't have a torch. 30 is a good gauge for this, and all kind of other things you might try in the future.

Kayfun Lite Nano is barely bigger than a Protank and a WHOLE LOT better.
Believe me, I know. I own and frequently use both.

KF Nano on my 4Nine is just as easy to carry as any Protank/battery setup. Simple to build/re-build and the builds last for as many as 10+ tank fills.
Oh, I have 7 and 2 Rocket tanks as well as 2 Orchids on the way.:)

As far as 'stock' coils, gotta agree the Kangers are alot easier than I thought they were gonna be. Been researching it for a few months now before I finally decided to jump in.. I barely started on Wednesday morning when my Kanthal arrived in the post but Ive already got a whole box of heads for my Evod/PT2/PT2 Mini ready to go.. Bought 32ga like the stock coils are, and its reeeeaaaally tough if you dont have patience and a steady hand but after the first one I did (which was a success although I couldnt get it to stick like a micro) they just got easier and easier with each one.. I got to my third one before I made my first 99% perfect microcoil, and after that I got my winding jig down pat and every one since has been perfect. Hard to see at that gauge but all of mine are 5/4 wraps and clock in between 1.8 and 2.3 ohms. The 2+ ones are the first couple I did that wouldnt quite stick together, but every one after that became the teeniest coil youll ever see and sit perfect at 1.8.. I may go for 6 or 7 on the next couple cause these are a little warm on my throat (either that or its such a clean vape now, I gotta drop from 18mg haha)..

Crxess - so you say the Kayfun Lite Nano is about the same size as a PT?? Thats good to hear.. How much smaller is that than the regular KF and the KFL?? After my coil journey this week I want an RBA now, but cant decide between a KF, Fogger, Rose V2, or a Russian (clones of course being a poor broke guy here).. Whatever it is, I wanna keep the 'form factor' close to a PT as I can, meaning bottom feeding/single coil (dont wanna bother learning how to do a Genesis style right now). Folks say the KF is the easiest to get into but Ive read the same about Russians, and Foggers, and the Rose V2 just looks like it would be awesome to build on as a single coil too. Staying away from the Squape Reloaded clones as Ive read more horror stories about bad machining than good ones. Was looking at the Taifun GT's until I realized the tanks were so big they would probably knock my MVP2 over.. My PT2 is actually heavier than the MVP body as it is!

Dont torch them at all.. All that does is weaken the wire prematurely.. Check out the "Rebuild Protank Microcoil" thread thats around.. Mac Tech Viper and Cigatron and co hanging out in there will drop some serious science on the subject.. I torched my first one and all it did was make the sponginess worse.. Now I just make sure Im wrapping them with some serious tension around a jewelers screwdriver so they pretty much already stick as close together as they are.. After that, pull and straighten/tension the legs while its STILL on the drill bit.. Then while leaving it on the drill bit, set the coil in the head, tension the legs again.. Now slide on the insulator (dont install it), grab both legs with pliers and hold again, THEN pop the insulator in and do the same while putting in the pin.. Remove driver/drill bit/etc and the coil is set..

Nows the tricky part.. I have some really small needlenose tweezers but you still have to be quick to get in there before it cools.. Now just dry burn/fire the coil til its red, stop firing, get in there and squeeze that sucker! I do it 3 or 4 times because 32ga does NOT stick together as well as the thicker gauges, and after the 3rd or 4th squeeze theyre pretty damn perfect... I was so shocked that I pulled it off so quickly, cause looking at peoples macro shots of their heads and coils, you dont realize how small of an area youre working with til you do it yourself hahaha.

I still cant believe how much better they are than the stock Kanger setup.. Not only am I puffing like a dragon with a 'little' Protank 2 and PT2 Mini, I can finally TASTE my juice like it was meant to be! Been hanging onto whats left of a bottle of my favorite blue raspberry for awhile now anticipating getting my 'big' PT2 (just showed up this morning) and wow.. It was awesome in the regular Evod tanks, but now its like DAMN IM EATING A BLOW POP WITHOUT THE AFTERMATH OF THE BLUE TONGUE!!! :)
