Just curious as to your opinions out there on the available Vari-Volt mods. These can be on tube or box mods. I am considering a Pro-Vari but then came across the monkey boxx, i just bought a Big Brother vari-volt but might be trying to sell or trade it for one that comes with a built in voltage display. Not too sure i want to have to continue taking on and off the volt meter. Any thoughts or opinions are greatly appreciated. And if you have a tube or box mod that doesn't have the digital display such as the Big Brother i have and think the digital display isn't all that important, please tell me that too. As always, I love this forum!!!!! Thanks in advance.

Just my opinion, the Provari or Darwin, are great for long battery life and great vapes...The digital display helps a lot if you want to know the atty rating in ohms, battery voltage, low battery indicator, etc......for Juice fed try the REOSMODS or the Ali'i from rnrmanufacturing, a little expensive but worth it. You will get lots of opinions here, it like a religious discussion! Good Luck!

soooo, what is your device of choice, did you build your own?

Many of the people that frequent this section of the forum are amazing craftsman and have found simple ways to implement a wide range of features in beautiful looking mods.

Most of us that hang out here build our own devices that encompass features you find in the production VV mods. My latest device uses the same type of battery as the Darwin (but triple the capacity) and uses digital voltage control like the Pro-Vari. It has a couple other features not found in either. It's the perfect device for me because it's built to my specifications. My next one is going to be a highly compact version of the same with a smaller battery, overall size similar to a Janty Stick. I'm excited about that one, challenging though. The last one was too, took me well over 6 months and several design iterations to get it nailed down.

I would wait for the eclipse. It has an integrated piezoelectric pump.

Yea, that Eclipse sounds interesting, but my concern would be that it suffers a bit of feature overload. I guess we'll see when it hits the streets, but the web side says that was supposed to be 3 months ago. Might be a case of vaporware going on there, hehe, so to speak.

Lol. Yea, I've seen them on VapeTv, so they have actually built them, but they might be having supply or pricing issues or something like that. I hope it turns out to be a high quality unit.

Did your mod use a buck-boost converter? I haven't read all of the the threads on here, but most of the mods just use a buck converter. That is one thing that I find interesting about the provari (maybe the darwin and eclipse use it too), it can get higher voltages out of a single cell. I'm guessing you used the TPS43000 judging by your avatar.

VV Army Tank built by JMarkus on these forums is bad .... VV bottomfeeder in a super small size with no amp cutoff. Problem with both my provari and darwin was the super low amp cutoff point and the advent of dual coil and now 3 coil cartos. The old high tech mods are falling behind the times fast. Amp cutoff is great when you don't want to burn up an atty or carto, but there are cartos out there that can take 25 watts + and still not burn the juice.

VV army tank there in the middle. Its so light in weight that he put a lanyard mount on it for me 8)

I like my provari but I recently built a .44 boost circuit. Designed by Breaktru, it works as good if not better. I ordered the ptn04050C as a sample. I actually ordered three of them. They showed up in 6 business days and I bought all the other things I need from rat shack. Next time I will go to frys for components. I put it all together, first try, first circuit I have ever made. It works great! Thanks Breaktru.

I am currently working on a number of things. A genesis, my own circuit diagram, my own tubes. I just bought a lathe yesterday, I've been getting it all setup right so I can use it. LittleMachineShop.com - HiTorque 7x12 Mini Lathe My first order of business is to make a a genesis with it.

Craig I would love to build or just vape one of your designs as I'm sure they are very nice. Haha I hope to see you at vapesfest :D

I've been using the TPS43000 with boost only and a single cell. I've only found one practical buck-boost topology with the efficiency and output we need for this application. It requires an LTC3785 controller and more parts. Don't know if it's really worth the trouble to get the fairly small usable range under battery voltage. I've been happy with the "boost only" configuration I've been using so I'll probably stick with it.

The buck converter is the best one to use for all but one consideration. You need to run two cells in series which complicates on-board charging.

The Pro-Vari uses buck-boost. I have no idea how they've implemented it, but they have issues with mediocre output capacity and poor run times. From what I've read, the Darwin is boost only and does not have any performance issues. Though, without getting into a nitpick list, there's lots of things I don't like about the Darwin. In my opinion, the Pro-Vari has a much better concept of design. I know nothing about the Eclipse and reserve judgement on that one.
