I would try using a q-tip with 91% rubbing alcohol (get at any pharmacy). Don't overdo it as you could easily ruin the battery. 91% alcohol will evaporate somewhat faster and with less residue than regular 70% alcohol will.

You might want to look at your filling habits too. If you are getting "gunk" on the battery, it could be that you are flooding the atty by overfilling the cart/overdripping. It probably wouldn't hurt to GENTLY blow out the battery with compressed air, as there is probably some liquid in it as well. From 6-12" away, GENTLY blow into the battery with the air. If it's a manual, you might be able to gently blow around the button too. Did I mention to do so gently?

I'm sure my filling habits had a lot to do with the build up. This is my first battery,so I was still learning to fill carts with it.
Even with it being a month old,I was too nervous to to try getting liquid that close to the hole,so I ended up digging most of the gunk out with a diaper pin. I may try blowing it out,if it gives me trouble in the future, but for now it works fine, and I don't see the point in possibly ruining a good battery

A dry microfiber cloth will remove the gunk without using liquid. Get into the habit of using it on the atomizer and battery connections each day to remove the natural verdigris that comes with brass connections (e-liquid makes it grow fast). Most 99 cent stores carry them and I buy them by the hand full and cut then into quarters and stash them everywhere (car, purse) since they're great to use instead of a tissue and you can wash them (I usually toss them though).

Be sure to clean your battery before charging too (keep a cloth by the charger) so you don't transfer the gunk inside the charger.

To remove any liquid inside an auto battery I always used a small twist of tissue inside the air hole and stood it on end (with the tissue still inside) overnight.
