After watching several YouTube videos during my first week of vaping, I was impressed with one method of cleaning cartomizers. Sorry, but I can't remember who created that video, but I'm thankful to whomever did. After vaping for a month now, I've found that this method works great and is very cheap. The tool needed is less than $2.00 at Walmart: a 10ml syringe kit, with a rubber cone and a 5ml measuring cup (which isn't used to clean cartos).

I don't use boiling water, because I discovered that very hot water will shrink the filler inside the cartos. I only use hot tap water...no rubbing alcohol, no vinegar, and no distilled water. I don't think it's necessary, but it's always possible I'll change my mind in the future.

In the kitchen sink, I'll fill a container with hot tap water, attach the threaded end of a carto to the end of the rubber cone, attach the rubber cone to the syringe, and then draw the water in through the carto with the syringe and then back out into the sink. Keep doing this until the water coming out is clear -- probably 6 to 8 times is sufficient. If you clean your cartos regularly, it shouldn't take many plunges to remove all the old liquid and gunk. Then I reverse the position of the carto and insert the mouth end into the rubber cone and repeat 3 or 4 times. Then plunge the syringe back and forth about 15 times, pushing air through the carto to remove all the excess water. Then remove the carto, blow through the mouth end to remove whatever water might be up near the threads. Then place the clean cartos in front of a fan for 3 or 4 days. I like the filler to be completely dry inside and don't want to add liquid to a damp filler. It takes more than overnight for the filler inside to be completely dry. When you refill the clean cartos, they will taste like new.

When your cartos start tasting funky, it's time to clean them or replace them with new cartos. I'm planning on cleaning my cartos at least every other time they need to be refilled, but more likely, every time they need to be refilled. This will depend on how many cartos I have on hand that I'm rotating, but I hope I'll always have plenty on hand. I wash my dishes every time I use them, so it makes sense to do the same with cartos.

When I refill cartos, I let them sit for 24 hours. In my experience, they are much better when letting them sit for that length of time, especially when using the eGo 1000mAh battery.

Also, be careful when plunging dry air through the cartos. It's real easy to pull up the plunger too far and break the end part of the plunger. I did it once and had to buy another kit.

Yes, the rubber cone is included in the kit, which is in the Walmart pharmacy, hanging on a rack in the aisle next to the first aid supplies.

I also blogged this post and made further comments here:

I'm no longer cleaning cartomizers (I only did that a few times as an experiment to see if it really worked, and it turned out to be not very effective) -- and I'm no longer using cartomizers very often.

Dripping has much more flavor and vapor, is cleaner tasting, and is actually less hassle. Every 3 drops is like one cigarette (9 drags). Cleaning atomizers is much quicker and easier. Just put them in a little measuring cup, pour in a little water that I've brought to a boil, and then blow out the excess water and either use the Highping dry-burn method (when I want to use them right away) or let them dry for a few hours or overnight.

Yes, mle, that's the video. Thanks for posting the link.

The syringe and rubber cone in the picture above also works fine for atomizers (to push water through them). I rarely use it for atomizers, though, since soaking in boiling hot water works just as well, along with the Highping dry-burn method, which works better because it actually turns to ash the gunk that's baked onto the insides of the atomizers. Just pushing water through atomizers won't remove the baked-on gunk.

Wait- are you saying this method isn't very effective?

I just use cartomizers because they last longer. I haven't had good luck dripping. I can't seem to get the hang of it.

that happened to me too. started out using cartos, thought i would never drip because of the hassle, but it's nice only carrying 1 atty and a few small bottles of juice, instead of several cartos and the juice.

tried cleaning cartos with multiple methods, it was just too much of a hassle.

easier to clean, better taste, last longer, no filler. dripping is where it's at.

Yes, that's what I'm saying, and I think I said that in a comment in that particular blog. Cleaning cartomizers is a waste of time, in my opinion, because it degrades their future performance. They should be discarded after refilling them about 15 times. By that time, the filler has degraded and isn't gonna be any better if you rinse it out with water. Boiling water will shrink the filler, so boiling water should never be used. I've only flushed some cartomizers (after I discovered that cleaning them was a waste of time) to remove juice I didn't want to vape. Drying in an oven for a few minutes at about 210 degrees worked well to dry them completely (better than using a fan, which takes over two days). When I used cartomizers all the time, I used 15 at a time, refilled about 12 of them each day, and every three weeks, I'd discard them all and use 15 new ones. Now I rarely use cartomizers and just drip from one bottle (since I only vape one liquid and have for the last four months) into two atomizers (I use two PVs at a time usually, to give each time to cool down, because the flavor comes through much better when not vaping a hot atomizer).

By the way, I didn't like dripping and using atomizers at the beginning, either. Now, after four months of vaping, that's all I wanna use. I got so tired of inhaling that filler taste and having to drag harder, with less flavor. It takes a little practice to get the hang of using atomizers, but it's really a lot better and not that hard. Drip 5 drops into a clean atomizer, blow lightly into it (to push the juice down a little), and then add 3 more drops. After a minute or so, it's ready to vape. Then drip 3 drops into the atty after about 9 vapes and repeat this step after every 8 to 9 vapes. You'll know when it's time to drip 3 more drops, because you'll notice a slight burnt taste. I've gotten so used to knowing when to drip 3 more drops that I rarely get a bad burnt taste anymore. The taste is so much cleaner and better.

I'll continue to keep a few cartomizers to use when I'm driving or perhaps when I'm at a casino (but I'm gonna try dripping at the casino, because I'm tired of the hassles of switching cartomizers every 45 minutes to hour and having to refill them, etc).

From what I've read here, I think most vapers start out with cartridges, then upgrade to cartomizers, and then switch to atomizers after they've vaped for a while. Seems to be the normal progression in the vaping experience.

Guess I'm lucky. I don't carry around bottles of juice, or carts, or anything other than the PV. My carts lasts a long time and work like a champ. If I'm using my bottom-feeder with a cart, I've got the 3ml bottle in the mod and it lasts most of the day. If anything, I'll take a spare battery, but that's it.

If you just started vaping recently, you'll probably change the way you vape a few times in the next few months. But that's normal...

Delaware, Ohio,
Hello all,
This is my first post to any forum. On Jan. 5, 2011 at 5:pm, I stopped using analogs. After much research and a desire not to spend more money experimenting than on cigarettes I took Leland's (he's on many forums) advice and ordered the new Maxx Fusion form Bloogplanet. I don't know if it's better than any other model availiable, but I have not had a regular cigarette for 10 days.
The model comes with cartomizors. I've noticed after a day or two, they start to draw harder and really drain the batteries.
I now use one for 24-36 hours, then drop it in 151 rum, let soak for 24hrs. rinse with warm water, let dry overnight. This seems to do the trick so far.

I'd have to agree with deback about the performance of cartos after being cleaned. The syringe method works in a pinch, but they just don't vape the same after being cleaned. If you do use this method, the first few draws after cleaning have a watery taste but it gets better after a few drags. They still don't get back to the original "good as new" level, but it's ok.
I also agree with the bit about dripping - there is a noticeable difference between dripping onto an atty and using a carto. IMHO: cartos for on-the-go situations, but dripping whenever possible.
