If it was me I would say something, and then let it be done with.
Yes,...they work great on bare metals. I use the Norton Bear-Tex #748 gray pads. I think those 3M pads are a little coarser, but I think they'll work just fine. Might even make brushing over scratches a little easier... There's an assortment of Notrton Bear-Tex pads floating around ebay somewhere. It comes with 16 different colored pads.... Good stuff.
