Ooooh, what a disturbing news story. I really hated the pic with the pile of vape supplies and the police leering over them as if they were some sort of.... Much nastier "bust" than what THIS is.

I gotta say, the guy who got busted who "admitted his crimes in every detail" (who puts things like that, by the way?) either has waaaayyyy bigger cojones than I ever could have, or else he's a total advocate who was like, "I am going to DO this regardless even if my government said I shouldn't, because it's the right thing to do." I'd be terrified to end up in a Thai prison, I really, really really would.

:( :( :(

Pathetic times indeed when our world governments are more concerned for the mighty buck in their pockets than they are for the health of their citizens.

Smoke, stay ill, support your tobacco companies and pharmaceutical companies !!!

I dont think we could name one "government" in the history of civilization that wasnt.

"Absolute power corrupts absolutely."

The more power a government has over the people, the more restrictive and stupid the laws become.
The more the people depend on the government to survive, the less power the people have.

Yes, just stating the obvious.

A third possibility is that they beat the crap out of him and threatened to put his family in jail if he didn't confess.

The husband and I went out to dinner yesterday and ended up discussing where we might move if things got too dreadful here. We couldn't come up with a country :)

There's always off the grid, but OMG, that doesn't sound so great either.

Asbestos, that needs a "drinking coffee" warning, I choked. :D Guess it's better than spitting coffee all over the monitor, though. :)

WorksforMe, I only liked your post because it's probably true. I was just amazed that a newspaper article would contain the phrase "Confessed in every detail" that sounds like some of the awful psych experiments they were doing in the 50s and 60s.... Like having people electrical shock each other. I guess if Thailand doesn't care about its citizens, that kind of sick phrase would be normal. :( I really like the right not to incriminate myself, though that is getting harder here, too, thanks to endless electronic monitoring and slow erosion in society as far as basic freedoms:ohmy:.

I've been to Thailand many times and during most of those times I was smoking cigarettes because they are so affordable and well, the holiday vibe usually unravelled my resolve to stick to harm reduction methods like vaping.

This year I've given up smoking entirely and refuse to smoke. I have a holiday to Thailand planned for October and I have been warned by my friend that the laws on vaping have been toughened in Thailand. People caught vaping will be fined by police. The rules are never applied uniformly or consistently in Thailand and in some areas, people still vape openly without any interference by police. Other times, a simple bribe will get someone off the hook and they may have their gear confiscated.

I am considering cancelling my trip. I haven't booked anything yet and I am now considering not going at all. The last thing I want to do is go on holidays and come back with a new cigarette addiction.

Thailand is usually one country you can count on anything being legal or allowed in some capacity but like the paradoxical and corrupt country it is, almost everything is legal and yet they have banned vaping. It is a blatant measure to ensure the government continues to get its tax revenue from tobacco sales.

It is the same in the USA with its deeming regulations but the Americans are better at contriving a framework of excuses and phony allegations that vaping is harmful. They are better at pretending the reason is public health, but ultimately, these oppressive laws are designed to stymie people from defeating tobacco tax laws and have absolutely no regard for the health of their citizens.

At least Shinawatra and the king didn't ban e-cigs. The king was kind and benevolent, he would have known that e-cigs are an important step in public health. This junta military government is corrupt.

For that reason alone I may avoid going to Thailand this time around.

That's pretty much the history of mankind.

It's measures like this that prove we are still in the dark ages and Man is still a savage selfish primitive unenlighened beast, barely deserving of its place in the universe.

If we can make laws to prevent people from taking up harm reduction habits in place of a much more damaging and lethal habit, for the purpose or maximising revenue then we are still barely out of the trees as a race. We might as well kill each with stones and swords again, because this is no different to killing your own people with cigarettes to ensure profitability is maximised for the constituents who benefit from tobacco supply.

It would be lovely to take a momentary flight of supremacy and say that the Thailand is a primitive backward country but the same thing is happening in the USA, albeit, with more contrived and complex justifications to make it appear as though they care about public health.
