Big Ecig Noob Here

Just ordered a provari mini starter kit based upon what I have read on these forums (my wife doesn't even know, I'll hear about it later, but if it helps me quit smoking then hey..). On USPS it says a shipping label has been prepared and it is in pre-shipping. It must go from WA to IN so any idea when I can expect this thing (a bit anxious to get going if you can't tell) and what does my next step need to be after I receive it in order to get vaping on some cool flavors?

Again, huge noob here and I smoke 1 pack of marlboro reds a day (about 6 years now) if that helps at all. I'm totally ready to switch to vaping and any support is much appreciated. I know it ain't gonna be a walk in the park but it seems a lot of success stories on here involve a provari. Thanks guys!

Wow, that's a huge step for someone just getting into vaping. But at the same time it's a great device. (At least from all I've read, I don't own one). I have two ways of thinking when it comes to vaping. 1. Start cheap and see if you like it and then move up. Or 2. Start with better equipment. You'll avoid the hassles and headaches of cheaper devices and be much happier with the experience. With all I've spent I wish I would have started with more than the ego twists. Lots of people use them and like them and it works for them. That's awesome. Not me, but I'm happy with what I have now. (Mostly anyway lol)

Main thing is cutting the cigs. Congrats on that step. That's worth every penny. It's a really enjoyable hobby too for many of us. Good luck. Commit to it, stick to it and throw out those stinkies. Glad to hear

Welcome Brett, jumped in with both feet I see - excellent :)

As the posters above stated, you've got a great first device. The Provari is well represented on the forum so you'll find plenty of support if you need it.

Meanwhile, mightymen offered some great advice to visit a local B&M to try out various e-liquids to see if you can find one you like. Don't be surprised to find you only like a small percentage of them though - I think I am at about a 10% like rate on store bought liquids.

Welcome Brett and good luck with your wife! It helps to divide the cost of your outfit to a carton or two of Marlboro's to illustrate the savings. I found vaping was almost a walk in the park because I like it so much. Have a real smoke now and then to see how bad they taste and appreciate the vape. It sounds like you got a real nice starter kit.

Hardware is easy. :D Figuring out your liquids is the tougher part. It's going to come down to two separate issues: Finding flavors you like and finding the right nicotine level.

Whatever you do, stick with small sample size bottles and small orders on liquids when you start. Avoid any temptation to order a bus load of liquids all from the same place, because there are reasons if you don't like the first couple you try you make not like the other 32 you got from the same place either. Keep it down to a half dozen samples or less per order when you start.

There is no hard and fast rule when it comes to finding a personal nic level. Everyone seems to absorb nic differently from vaping, how much you smoked figures in, some people get hit harder with quit smoking withdrawal than other people... Considering the type of hardware you are starting with, I would suggest getting three samples at 12 mg, 18 mg and 24 mg nic levels to see what works for you or what may be too much. Maybe even a 6 mg as well. Just start vaping and see what happens. If 6 or 12 isn't enough - no harm - but you will end up chain vaping through it and still having pretty bad cravings. If an 18 or 24 seems like too much - just stop - you can always mix it with some zero nic or lower nic liquid later on to get it to a lower level.

Flavors? Lol - not touching that one. I'm a lame vaper - I'll vape just about anything without complaint. But some people are really picky about their liquids flavors though and can't seem to find much of anything they like.

Welcome to ECF Brett! :) I'm with the others, very nice starter kit! I have a Provari too and love it. There is a ProVape forum here if you haven't seen it ProVape

Find a local vape shop that has a tasting bar and dig in. What one person thinks is the cat's meow, another will hate. Over time your taste buds are going change as your body recovers and heals from the toxins. Don't buy a gallon at a time and experiment with different mg juices. Also a good idea to have a stronger juice around for those times when the cravings get bad. Good luck to you, I'm sure you will do well.

ETA - And Rick beat me again. Read his post again, it's way better. :p

    Hey Brett,

In my opinion, if your goal is to vape to quit smoking, the juice is critical. I know people who have started with weird stuff like strawberry rainbows or stuff like that. They fail because it's not replacing all the aspects of smoking. You will be carrying stuff around like smokes. It will taste like smokes. You can have it when you crave it like smokes. Start with a cigarette flavored juice. And I would buy my first juice at 24 mg if you were smoking a pack a day. The 24 mg will make you not want to smoke on its own. Then go down to 18 and 12 and so on as you feel able to. Remember that you can always go back up. I smoked a pack or more for 30 years and quit the day I started vaping. Furthermore I wasn't even trying to quit. My son did it first and dared me to try it. I've not looked back. It's only been seven weeks now but I already know I will never smoke again. I have smokes in the house that I absolutely have no interest in. Good luck I'm right behind ya.

    Welcome Fellow Hoosier!

I'm with Rickajho - flavors are so subjective. I was a menthol smoker for the better part of 30 years, and I don't really care for tobacco-flavored juices. I tried a couple early on (vanilla tobacco, and I even mixed in some menthol-flavored juice.) Just never cared for them. I have a voracious sweet-tooth, so fruits and desserts were where I gravitated. I do like coffees, but they can be tricky. Love vanillas/custards and fruits and cream or fruits and mints.

Do smart small - you might look for sites that offer combination boxes so you can try different vendors and their flavors. Inexpensive sites include Mt. Baker Vapor and Killer Juice, as well as many others. Killer Juice offers weekend sales of select juices for $0.99 or $1.99 for 15mL bottles. So, if one's a bust, it's not a huge waste. Or, you might find if you mix a couple of "busts" you can come up with something tolerable.

Even though you are getting a Provari, read up on battery safety (there's a whole section here in the forums) with the replaceable batteries.

What tank(s) did you get? Tanks and Juice seem to be the biggest variables. Though some may argue (and I'm not intending on starting any kind of altercation) batteries are merely power sources. As long as it's safe and can drive enough current to vaporize your juice, you should be moving in the right direction.

Good luck! Happy Vaping. Let us know what you think when all the goodies arrive!

    Welcome Brett,

Nice set up.. As the others have stated juice taste is subjective. As others have said buy in small amounts at first, because your taste buds are gonna come back to life, and some things that tasted really good to you before, might not taste as good now. I also noticed no one said drink more water, this is a must. Just don't give up. One thing I figured out when I started is I didn't like the Tobacco flavors, so I went with a drink flavor I liked instead.

Been analog free for almost 2 moths now.

    Good luck.

I wish I had gotten a Provari when I started rather than spending hundreds on cig-a-likes and junk batteries. You made a great choice!

I bought my second last Sunday and it arrived today. You are a bit closer to WA than I.

Congrats! What color did you buy?

Along with the excellent suggestions on juices remember a good tank can make a difference too. Not trying to throw too much at nice at you. I started with ego twist and iclear tanks. Actually not terrible. Then an aerotank. Then a rda. (Dripper). Then a mod, then an MVP. Recently a kayfun (amazing btw). Coil building etc. fun hobby. Seriously envy the pro air choice lol. Haven't ever had the chance to try one. But you can't go wrong there. Again, welcome and enjoy your vaping experience.

Well you sir came out swinging! I'm not sure I've heard of someone starting out with a Provari. It is a great device. I own one and love it. I don't remember which tank the starter kit comes with but I'll suggest starting out on the lower end of the power setting and working your way up. Many factory coils don't do well with higher power. Many people look for tobacco flavors when they first start but I would say don't limit yourself to that. You have a whole new world of flavors available. As mentioned though buy small samples for awhile, your tastes will change. Heck I havn't had a cig in 6+ months had a bottle I loved for the last couple weeks then mid day yesterday it tasted pretty bad and still does... My 2 cents is check out the Vaping Zone. I've only tried two of their liquids being Green Apple Kiwi and Vanilla Sponge Cake, both of which are excellent! Don't be afraid to ask questions, Its a great community here.

Definately look around for a brick and mortar nearby. I vaped for over a year before I realized there was a vapor store less than a mile from my house. I took a matter of minutes for them to find me a flavor that may very well be my favorite. I've "quit" smoking enough times to know it's sort of an ongoing process but what seems to be working for me is to quit looking for the perfect tobacco flavor. I never found one that was very satisfying anyway.
