The silver did not really loose the color. I would notice on some of the older ones the plating would start to rub off. I think just like any other plating, it will very with each person. As far as the black wearing off, not really sure. My wife has been using hers with a black switch for 4 months with no signs of wear. She also use the Silver switch for well over a year with no signs of wear. It will really depend on you
