Have you considered a product such as J-Wraps or Vapor Skinz? You could DIY a wrap, I'm sure. I believe Alice has played around with the materials.

There are also leather cases/holster at Serenity Gear.

I know you were asking about the durability of the paint, but these options came to mind, so I posted. :toast:

If I remember right, Rob said that black wrinkle is about the strongest finish he has on Reos, and one that least shows scratches. That's not to say that if you drag it behind your car for a few miles, it won't show scratches :) Matter of fact, don't drag it behind your car even if you put J-Wraps on it.

I honestly didn't care much for Serenity Gear cases. Just personally, they felt too thick for my taste. Some people love them. I ended up getting a chunk of thin leather from Hobby Lobby and sewing a case for my Grand. Gonna do the same for my Mini.

I love the look and finish of the BW; my favorite for those qualities. I personally don't want to cover it. And it doesn't show dirt and absolutely no fingerprints. I just traded my VVG BW for an Ebony/Quilted 18490. But I will be getting another BW in near future.

But I've gotta report something. I've been using BW almost exclusively for probably 2 months at home and out and about. It has taken several dives onto hard ceramic tile and very hard commercial vinyl without any chipping or scratching BUT it hasn't jumped onto rocks or concrete AND.... when I was wiping it off before sending to Dano I noticed, in a certain angle of bright light some barely noticeable rub places that had smoothed the surface a bit and had a very slight luster that the rest didn't have. You have to look very closely and bright light at just the right angle. I could not capture it on camera. It is not on any edges rather the flat back surface towards bottom 1/3.

So what caused this??????? Only thing I can think of is I carry it in my work apron with one other object, a plastic chap stick. That is the only thing that ever comes into contact with it other than my hands. In my purse outside pocket nothing ever touches it and most usually it is on the seat or in a plastic console drink holder and the only part of REO that comes in contact with that is edges and bottom and they are unaffected.

The only finish that can be "abused" and "hide" dings, gouges, and scratches is the silver anodized. Those are my work horses but I think I'm not nearly as "abusive" to even my work horses as many people are to even those they take measures to keep somewhst pristine.

That being said I WILL have another Black Wrinkle.

Although I've had the gadget skinz for over a year I have yet to play with it. And as I said earlier, part of the pleasure of using the BW is the tactile feel. That will be lost with any protective cover.

I believe that the anodizing process provides some surface hardening as well as some chemical resistance properties so the silver anodized might be superior to a raw tumbled finish for durability. I have no Reo experience this is just from general experience with other aluminum products.

I have plenty of long term experience with both. Bad thing about tumbled with no clear coat is it is really soft and even the most careful, gentle attempt to remove even the tiniest scratch makes a shiny place that doesn't match the rest of finish. I found this out first tumbled trying to remove a tiny, light scratch using micro sized q-tip and gentlest metal cleaner/protector. It really bugged me so it is now a polished. My tumbled Grand and Mini purchased when Robert first started releasing them have virtually not been used as I was going to put Skinz on them but never got around to doing it. So they are headed to Robert to remove the pressed fittings and then on to Anodizers Are-I for fancy finishes.

The silver anodized disguises dings, scratches, and even gouges the best. The bare aluminum is the identical color of the silver anodizing. With the silver anodized you can still see the tumbled texture through the anodizing. We have one Silver of each style except for Mini 2.1 but 2 or three Mini 1.0. DH drops them so much onto concrete and rocks that's the only color I've "let" him use for almost 2 years.

Thanks for all the input! I went with a tumbled raw Grand. Can't wait to get it!

Color / finish isn't important on your first REO. 6 REOs in just under 6 months and i still see a color i want almost every time I see a new post.

When will this madness end...

I am liking the metals. Thought I would really like the woodvil but it was too nice to use more than a couple times.

Wrinkle looks great w/ copper vein by the way.

Good to hear because I just ordered a Grand in silver anodized hoping for the features you just described. :)

A sampling of our Silver Anodized. None of these have ever had covers and they are used a lot.
