Because of all of the great setups available it almost seems a step back to take an interest in carto's, but I wanted to give them a try. I ordered some lr xxl's from MBV along with some juice I ordered for someone as a Christmas present. I watched a few videos on the setup, and I used the condom method to fill it with juice. The filler material appeared fully saturated so I gave it a few vapes. The first 3 or 4 vapes were wonderful with tons of flavor and vapor. But then, after only a few vapes I start getting a burnt taste. I have read that once filled they should last a typical vaper a few hours, so does anyone know what I may be doing wrong? It has great flavor, and if I can get it working properly and it works as well as it did on those first few toots, I will be getting a carto tank and adding cartos to my vape arsenal. Is anyone familiar with the boge xxl cartos and the issue I am having? Should I be hitting it the same as a clearo, or is the actual draw technique part of dialing in on these things?

Did you leave it for 10 mins to evenly soak through after filling? When I use carts I drip fill with about 20 drops. Dripping them in slowly and making sure its fully saturated before I stop adding more drops. Then just leave it for a bit. I never burnt one. I thought they tasted good for about 3 days and then they would start to clog up and tighten up on the draw and it was done.

I think it was more on the dry side after a few vapes. The "dry pocket" theory makes perfect sense. I had already thought that maybe I should have gotten the regular size instead of the xxl. They seem like they would be more easily saturated without dry pockets versus the xxl with so much more filler material for the juice to pass through. What are the signs of a "bad carto" and how common is it to get a bad one?

- Thin your juice so it'll flow nice

_ even soaked, have to wait a bit.

-Turn your voltage down for awhile.

- Once burnt, have to toss it
Hmm. So, 50/50 pg/vg might be too thick for this application? I din't let it sit for very long, so that might have been the problem also. I will just have to mess around with it some to get it figured out. They are cheap enough that if I mess a couple up it isn't a great loss.

I've been using BOGE cartos for a couple years now. If you like them carto tanks are the way to go. The dripping method works but the best method I've found is putting a syringe down into the filler to prime. I do get some flooding when they are first filled but a couple hits takes care of that. Leaving them sit for awhile helps. Give them a couple draws without firing to make sure the coil isn't dry. I'll get a bad carto about 1 in 10 but I have about a 5 year supply. gl

For quite some time now Boges do not fill as easily as they once did. Since I now use only carto/tank setups for convenience, on first fill only, I use a syringe to fill the carto and tank. Fill the syringe with plenty of juice and stick it about half way down the side of the carto missing the little wire you will see and s-l-o-w-l-y fill it. Assemble the tank and then use the syringe to finish filling the tank. Once filled set both aside for at least 15 minutes to allow full saturation. This is a good time to put any left over juice back in the bottle, clean everything up, wash out the syringe, etc. When I'm ready to pull the first vape I top off the carto with the juice bottle until slushy, turn the voltage down slightly, and then pull a couple of s-h-o-r-t vapes. If you hear any gurgling take the carto (tank) off the battery, place a tissue on the battery end of the carto, tilt your head back and blow through the carto to remove the few excess drops. On next fill and thereafter I just use the juice bottle, filler tube, etc. A little extra work for first time filling but works every time for me.

An xl size carto will take 30 - 50 drops (depending on drop size) to properly prime/ fill.
If you rush the process liquid will leak out of the bottom before the wicking material is fully saturated. If you insufeciatly fill the carto the wicking material nearest to / surrounding the coil will dry rapidly and burn when vaped.
IMO/E, boges have very dense filler which absorb liquid very slowly. :2c:

After it tastes burnt that carto is done, time to fill a new one.

Well, I filled a new one with a different juice, but still 50/50. I used the condom, then once all of the juice was inside the cart I removed the condom then inverted it and set the carto back on the condom to allow any puddles to soak in. I left it for about 15 minutes and I have took a couple vapes. Man, I dig that sizzle!!!! You just know you're gonna get a mouthful of flavor just by how it sounds! I turned my MVP down to 6 watts and I am going to keep an eye on the saturation of the filler material. After all, it is easy enough to do with a drip tip on it, right? If I can get this thing to fire consistently like it does on those first few vapes, carto's might become my new go-to for a while. :) Let it set, then a couple more, and still hitting like a beast! The filler material still looks wet, but not soaked. I think it is something that takes a little trial and error to get dialed in on. But that awesome flavor and sizzle is worth pursuing.

Ah, I need to put more juice in this one. I only put 20 drops drawing from my recollection of something I had watched or read. And, how do you tell when to refill? I thought you would start to get a bit of a burnt taste, but more than once on this thread someone has said they're trash after getting a burnt taste.

When to refill is one of those learn as you go things. When the flavor diminishes or changes, slight hint of dry/ weak flavor.
I'm one of the few that believe a carto kinda breaks in over a period of time. The first day I'm cautious not to vape heavily, chain vape, check the filler & drip a few drops from time to time to ensure I don't burn the carto.
By the second or third day usually you can rip on one without worry.

IMO, using a punched carto in a tank eliminates or vastly reduces the when to fill to prevent burning aspect, provides more/better flavor and extends carto life.

Yeah, I'm prolly gonna spring for a tank to take out some of the variables. I like checking out new gear so this will be my next venture. Question, with 50/50 juice would I need 1 or 2 holes punched in the carto? And, is this setup prone to leaking?

I've always used the Boge prepunched with 2 holes. I've been using 50/50 juice for awhile with no problems.

Tanks are nice, you don't have to worry about topping off, the tank takes care of that. One thing about tanks, it is not unusual for the top of the filler to look dry. And yes once a carto tastes burnt, it will always taste burnt. I also use a syringe to prime my cartos, even when I use a tank. Been using the Boge XXL for over a year, managed to burn only one, takes a little time.

Here is a link to a Blog by Baditude, lots of good info. http://www.e-cigarette-forum.com/fo...-5-baditudes-cartomizer-tank-setup-guide.html
