Hey folks,

Just decided to take the plunge after trying out a co-worker's e-cig for a while. Did a lot of research, found out that the Joyes are generally the way to go. Both myself and my wife are trying to quit... Been rolling my own for nearly a year now and while it's saved me loads of cash, my lungs are suffering. While it's hard to measure in packs per day, due to the fact I just stuff a bunch of tubes and go, I'm fairly certain I'm over the 2 packs per day mark with my wife in hot pursuit. \

I ordered from cignot.com, since I could start off with two usb passthrough models. Got a couple sampler packs, some apple and menthol vg juice, and two drip-tips. Of course the kit comes with some sort of non-menthol filled carts, but i'm not sure if i'll use those or just dump em and try some of the juice I ordered.

Now that i've kinda introduced myself... Any tips for a brand new vaper trying to go full digital? My biggest worry is screwing up an atomizer using the drip tip, as well as keeping it clean and such for longevity, since i've heard atomizers can last anywhere from a few days to a few months. Any tips would be appreciated, including general advice not pertaining to atomizers. Pretty excited since my package arrives tommorow, just want to make sure I start off the right way.

Congratulations Tsunami! This is only my opinion, but I found that I didn't care for the atomizer/cartridge route because the cartridges held so little juice. I did keep my atomizers and am glad because I learned that's what I need to use for taste testing when I want to sample a variety of juices in quick succession. I ended up ordering some Boge cartomizers, which take the place of the atomizer and cartridge and have never looked back. Try the prefilled carts -- they may be okay. I still use some of the prefilled carts I got with my apollo when I first started vaping and while they are different in that I get a drier hit, they don't taste bad or anything. BTW -- the cheapest place I have been steered to for Boge's is CrystalClearVaping and he runs a 15 carto deal for 20 bucks. Keep posting and let us know how you are doing or if you have questions. Welcome to ECF!

As to your concern about the atomizer -- I guess letting it get too dry is a really bad thing which means you need to top off your cartridge or just drip directly onto it without the cartridge. Take off the drip tip so you can see what you are doing and add 3-4 drops of juice directly onto the atomizer. Then put your drip tip back on and vape away. I guess you could flood the thing with too much juice but if you unscrew it from your battery and then blow the excess back out into a little plastic cartridge end you can clear the excess and save it at the same time to squeeze back into your atty. This is just my experience from taste testing. I am sure others with much more knowledge will chime in soon. Once I started vaping I didn't feel the need for an analog again but I had broken my nicotine dependence with Chantix first. Many both smoke and vape at first while they get the hang of vaping and I guess most do quit tobacco altogether. Has your kit already arrived? Regardless, this forum is a wealth of info. Read, read, read, and watch Dr. Vapor on youtube!

I've definately been thinking about cartomizers, so it's good to know that boge is the way to go. I was under the impression that they were more along the lines of coming pre-filled and were generally not able to be refilled. If you can use a drip tip on them, which from what i've now read seems likely, they seem like a much better idea than typical atomizers.

I definately still have a lot to learn but thank you for your quick replies! Definately makes me feel welcome. :D

Welcome to the ECF. I'm glad you made a decision to get away from smoking tobacco. Using a Personal Vaporizer as an alternative is healthier and a lot more enjoyable.

There is a lot of information here, and it can be a bit overwhelming choosing the right PV and juice. However, it can also be easy if you choose good equipment and take your time in learning to use it.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Recommendation for those who don't want to read the whole thing:

This is your shopping list:
  • 1 standard 3.7v mod such as the Indulgence V3 or E-Power
  • 2 batteries for your mod
  • 1 battery charger
  • 2 packs of Boge 2.0 Ohm cartomizers for trying juices
  • 1 carto tank
  • Several sample packs of juice to try out

I know, I know; OMG! he's recommending a mod to newbies! My take is:
  • Small batteries are going to be frustrating and may lead to failure
  • eGo, Kgo and the like cost more money to replace batteries and don't have replaceable parts
  • A good mod will give a better vape, last longer and will be more likely to help you kick the smoking habit
  • Dripping is confusing and difficult for many people. Cartos are cheap, and you can use them to try a sample. If you don't like it, throw the carto and sample out
  • Filling cartomizers is a pain, a tank is easy to fill, lasts all day and needs to be replaced less often. Once you find your all-day vape, this is the way to go

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Many kits you will find online are made up of the following parts:
  • Battery
  • Charger
  • Cartridge (cart)
  • Atomizer (atty)

While an atomizer can be handy for testing new juices by direct dripping, this configuration is difficult to use and tends to perform poorly. The first thing you will want to get with your kit is a pack or two of cartomizers (cartos). Cartomizers have their own atomizer and cartridge in one piece, have a more consistent vape, and hold more juice.

Atomizers and cartomizers have a resistance rating in Ohms. You cannot use low resistance attys and cartos on a small battery as they pull too much power and will kill your small battery. You need a battery 450 Mah or higher for low-resistance attys and cartos.

The basic types of cartomizers are:
  • Standard resistance (usually 3.0 ohms)
  • Low resistance (as low as 1.5 ohms)
  • Dual-coil cartomizers
  • Cartomizer tank

The standard resistance cartos are the only cartos you can use on a small battery PV.

Low resistance cartos give more vapor and a hotter vape. The lower the resistance, the bigger the battery you need. For an even hotter vape with more vapor you need more wattage.

A cartomizer tank has a cartomizer inside a small tank. The cartomizer has a small hole punched in it to soak juice into the carto so that you can just fill the tank when it gets close to empty.

The basic types of personal vaporizers in use are:
  • Small battery, cigarette-sized
  • Big battery, cigar-sized
  • Standard modification (mod)
  • Variable-voltage modification (VV mod)
  • Bottom-feeder modification
  • Box modification

The small battery PV's are meant to simulate a regular cigarette as much as possible. These can be convenient as they are small and easy to carry. However, they have a very short battery life and require you to constantly have a battery charging.

The big battery types have a much longer battery life so that you can vape one PV all day without charging.

A standard mod has removable batteries of varying sizes. This enables you to have a PV that can stay charged for very long periods, and the batteries are removable and cheap which saves money. Many mods have replaceable parts so that if, for instance, a switch fails you just buy a new switch and replace it.

Variable voltage mods allow you to adjust the voltage depending on the carto and juice you are using at the time. This allows great flexibility, but you also need to have a workable understanding of voltage and resistance. Not recommended for new users.

A bottom-feeder mod is usually a box mod with a small juice bottle attached. You squeeze (squonk) the bottle to fill the attached cartomizer. Once you get used to sqonking the right amount of juice into the carto, you can get a very consistent vape all day long.

A box mod is just that: a box that contains a battery or batteries, an activation switch and a connection to screw your cartomizer or atty into. These can be small or big and blocky. They can also be variable-voltage.

The next thing you will need is juice. This is probably the most difficult part. Every one's tastes are different, and your tastes will change over time. You may even have periods where you can't taste anything, or everything tastes terrible. You may have a hard time finding juices you can vape all day. The best thing to do is try small samples until you find something you like, and then stock up on those. You will just have to experiment.

One important thing to know about juice: no juice is going to taste like burning tobacco. You aren't burning anything, you are creating vapor. The "tobacco flavored" juices taste more like chewing or pipe tobacco than cigarettes.

This is just my personal opinion, take it with a grain of salt. You are the only one who can decide what's best for you.

Finally: quitting smoking is difficult no matter what method you use. Take it easy on yourself. Take your time and if you still need to smoke as you're learning; go ahead and smoke. You will set yourself up for failure if you stress yourself out. Be patient, and you will get there.

Good morning tsunami987 and welcome! It's always nice to see a couple doing this together! Once you get your kits try using what came with them to start with. Doing so will give you both a chance to find out what you like and dislike about that particular system. If you decide that you'd like to try cartos on your passthroughs go with the Boge 2.0 ohm if the PTs are 3.7 volts. If they are a 5 volt model try the same brand carto in a 3 ohm.

Another suggestion is to not plug them into your computers. Yes, I know that they are designed to be but there have been problems with motherboards doing that. I use these 2 amp AC to USB Adapter, ideal for Passthroughs which work well for both 3.7 and 5 volt model PTs. Good luck to both of you!

Once again, thank you all! That was definitely a great post, and i'll have to go over it again before my next purchase.

Everything arrived today, ended up trying a couple of different flavors... Dripping definately seems like the way to go especially for tasting different flavors, although I'm curious if you can use something to clear flavors from your atomizer... Possibly vodka or something?

Lastly, I must say, I love the fact that I was able to choose two ego-t passthroughs for batteries. I think i'll need to ask the folks at cignot what the amperage is though, since it isn't listed anywhere.

Once again, thanks all for your input! I'm already quite enjoying this and hope to eventually be able to help some people out myself.
