With the aid of Super X's tutorial and the videos of Vapediver and Statistics I have been wrapping Micro coils for a while now. I've gotten to be quite proficient with all coils touching and even and I really like how they light up from the center outward when dry burning. They also provide a great vape with terrific vapor, throat hit and flavor. However, the question begged "are they really any different than fewer wrapped coils at the same resistance". I decided to do a double blind test using the following parameters:
1. I wrapped two coils. One a micro coil 9 wraps around a 16 ga needle with 28ga kanthal metering out to 1.2 ohms. The other a five wrap 30ga kanthal around a round toothpick which also metered at 1.2 ohms
2. I mounted each coil on a VV Grand with the same juice and set each VV Grand at 4.2 volts.
3. I vaped each coil for about 30 minutes to break them in.
4. With the aid of my Wife and Daughter (who both thought I was nuts) who I asked to change the RM2's around and also using a blindfold I performed a blind taste test comparison.
The results - I could not detect any discernible difference between the coils. They were both great.
Now I realize that I do not have the most sensitive taste buds. I use cotton for my wicks not because I can detect a difference in the taste but because it is cheaper and more readily available. I can't really tell the difference between what is considered a really great wine and a cheap one. So I do not claims to be an expert. My wife did the same test and she could detect the micro coil two out of three times. She likes the micro coil better.
So what is the point of this post? I am certainly not trying to denigrate or disparage micro coils and their supporters. The reason I am posting this is for those who may be new to RBAs or may fear they do not have to skills to make a micro coil. To those I say wrap a simpler coil and you will a similar if not exact vape. Once you have mastered the simpler coil you can than move on to wrapping competition grade coils. It's all good.
