Hurrah! I finally was able to build a coil with no hotspots or shorts on my RSST. I am not a newbie and have been building my own coils for my Kayfun, Ithaka clone, and Oddy clone, along with some drippers.
I gave up on building coil with SS mesh a while ago, but now with my rebuilding skills decided to take a crack at the RSST again. I have had an SG1 kit for forever to turn my 19e into a hybrid and now I just got a Hybrid Elite in my vapemail recently. I decided it was time to work on my skills further.
The other day, I oxidized mesh, did a few burns with ejuice on the mesh and wrapped a coil. It only lit up on the top and bottom coil. I tried the pulse method with no luck and put it back in a drawer. Today, I pulled it out again, but this time I was not as frustrated and began moving the coils around. Then all of a sudden, the wick started smelling like the juice I burned on it and not like nastiness. Then the coil began to glow evenly.
I knew I shouldn't be excited yet because I have had many a genesis coil work fine until I put the juice in the tank. Put the juice in, looked at my resistance and I was still at a solid 1.7 ohms. I took a draw and OMG not only did it work, but it was the cleanest, most flavorful hit of GJ4 ever, only a touch better than with my Ithaka clone!
As to the newbies that are still smashing their gennys into the wall, I would say split the build into two or three parts. After you make the coil, give it some time and then start the troubleshooting the next day. It took some serious fiddling with my coil to get it working well. I don't think I would have had the patience to fiddle with it as much if I just went straight through.
