The standard MT3 clearo which is the delivery device that comes with the 'kit' uses tiny pieces of silica wick, a 2.4Ω coil & very restrictive airflow.
Best used with 50/50 pg/vg because any higher vg won't wick reliably.
It is important to wet the wicking material with liquid (prime), fill tank, let sit for a few minutes before pushing the fire button.
Also, always start off a new / unused head at a low power setting & gradually work your way up to prevent scorching & burning.

What was the ohm rating on the coil? How many volts did you run it at? If you just cranked up the voltage, it is possible you burnt the coil.

Did you prime the coil?

Reads as though you got a good deal of good advice. Cannot think of much else, if anything to offer adding. :) Hope you do it sorted though. I too have had burnt taste a few times and know it isn't pleasant.
