Just got my first Cartos and tanks. Thought i'd get smart and check the carto resistance to avoid wasting juice in case the carto was a dud. Checked the ohms on the Provari, carto OK, fully primed and filled tank, instant burnt taste. Obviously burned checking it dry.

I'm assuming now (the hard way) that cartos must always be filled before checking ohms. Is the occasional dud carto full of juice just the cost of doing carto business?

Not sure about the other mods, but the Provari checks ohms resistance "UNDER LOAD". This means the Provari will send an electrical current to the atomizer and checks the atomizer while it is actually firing...under a load. The heat produced by the atomizer can be enough to burn the filler while it is dry. And once you'be burned the filler, the burnt flavor is there forever. The carto is ruined.

Moral to the story, don't check a dry carto's resistance with a Provari. There are ohm or resistance meters for around $20 available online and at vape shops.

Wow, that's pretty interesting and I would say is a bit of a failing of the Provari. You'd think they would have some kind of means of putting a much smaller regulated voltage through the coil to measure resistance instead of just blasting the the thing with full vaping power so that you could safely check resistance without requiring a "wet" attachment. If they want to measure resistance under load to maintain in-use power at the desired voltage or wattage, fine, but you'd think there'd be a way to test without frying a carto.

The Provari manual says it activates at very low voltage to check the resistance, but that voltage value not stated. Would like to know the actual "very low" voltage Provari puts out while checking ohms, if only to compare it to the standalone ohm meters. The meter Bad linked checks at 6 mA. Only way to find out may be to ask Provape directly.
I've also got an Itaste that has ohm checker will give that a try, already 1 carto down, whats another 2 bucks in the interest of science.

Put a digital multimeter on it with a resistor the same resistance as a cartomizer.

I can get half a normal drag when simply checking atty resistance on a Provari. Vamo, Zmax, and Innokin (SVD) won't do that. I haven't owned anything else to check ohms, other than various black box ohm testers or a multimeter. This is one of very few complaints I can make regarding the Provari, but I happened to know this before ruining a dry carto. On a similar topic, you can test the resistance of an atty that won't fire under normal circumstances and get it to glow for a second. Trivial and somewhat useless, but interesting.

These days you can get a 510 ohm meter for $10, USA seller if that matters. To the OP, if you're really in China, FT also has them for $10. You can get a DMM for less but it will never be as accurate. It seems you have an iTazte (sp), so the point is moot. Best of luck, may you never ruin a carto in this manner again!
