To much/to tightly twisted wick going through the coil. Cotton swells when it absorbs juice. If you have to much in it, when it swells it will choke off the wicking action and singe/burn aka dry hit.
Switch to japanese natural cotton. I hardly ever get a burnt hit with it. You can find it on Amazon as well as a few other places. It doesn't burn when you accidentally take a dry hit. There are a few videos on Youtube on how to set up your wick with it.
when i was using generic organic cotton, i was having that problem. i draw on it too often and too quickly. the wick didn't have time to pull the juice up. now i have changed to KGD, no issue.
